Kulfan’s NHL preview includes a Seider nod

The Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan posted a lengthy, subscriber-only NHL preview article this afternoon, and his one Red Wings mention comes in the form of naming a Calder Trophy candidate as a possible choice as the NHL’s best rookie player:

Moritz Seider, Detroit: As the season progresses, and Seider becomes accustomed to the NHL, he’ll grow into the force he’ll be for a long time in this league.

Friedman’s Red Wings-related thought is one we’ve all had

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman offers the following from his “32 Thoughts” column:

21. A little surprised Bobby Ryan and Detroit didn’t work out a contract, but Lucas Raymond sure earned his spot. Will Ryan be re-visited if the Red Wings need to add a veteran in the next few weeks? Not many places he’d rather go.

DBusiness.com discusses new restaurants at Little Caesars Arena

DBusiness.com’s R.J. King reports that two new restaurants are opening up in Little Caesars Arena:

Little Caesars Arena and hospitality partner Delaware North have announced two new restaurant concepts — The Mixing Board and PointsBet Sports Bar. The arena is located in The District Detroit.

The Mixing Board, a full-service restaurant, will include a stage for live music and entertainment along with décor that pays homage to the city’s automotive, musical, and industrial history. It replaces Kid Rock’s Made in Detroit eatery along Woodward Avenue.

The menu includes starters, salads, sandwiches, flatbread pizzas, sharables, desserts, craft cocktails, and craft beer. Both individual and shared items are served on custom wooden boards.

Handheld items such as The Woodward Stack (a double cheeseburger with signature sauce, shredded lettuce, tomato, bacon, shaved onion, and B&B pickles on a brioche role) are served on personal boards, while larger charcuterie-style boards were developed for sharable options such as The Neighborhood’s Sausage Board (Italian, Polish, and Irish sausages, charred peppers, craft pickled vegetables, grill onion, mustards, horseradish, and soft pretzels).

“When developing the concept for The Mixing Board, we initially built around two key focus areas: community involvement and a Michigan-first menu,” says Tim Martin, general manager for Delaware North at Little Caesars Arena. “This is a venue for local artists to share their work — a place where the community comes together.

Lucas Raymond gets a nod from NHL.com as a ‘training camp surprise’

NHL.com’s Mike G. Morreale posted a list of players who were “training camp surprises” in terms of making NHL rosters this season, and Lucas Raymond made his list:

Lucas Raymond, F, Detroit Red Wings: The 19-year-old (5-11, 182) led the Red Wings with six points (two goals, four assists) in six preseason games. Raymond, the No. 4 pick of the 2020 draft, has been skating on a line with Dylan Larkin and Tyler Bertuzzi during training camp. A right-shot left wing, he scored 18 points (six goals, 12 assists) in 34 games with Frolunda of the SHL last season.

A bit of praise for Calder Trophy candidate Moritz Seider from Sports Illustrated

Sports Illustrated’s Dan Falkenheim posted a list of Calder Trophy candidates to watch this upcoming season:

Moritz Seider | Detroit Red Wings | D

Before 2020, Seider hadn’t earned many superlatives beyond best German blueliner prospect in nearly two decades. He wasn’t even a top-three European defenseman in his draft class. That changed, quick. Seider, at 19, joined the Swedish Hockey League’s Rögle BK for the 2020–21 season. There he scored seven goals and 28 points, led Rögle BK to the league’s finals and took defenseman of the year honors. He became the youngest winner in the award’s seven-year history.

A two-way right-handed defenseman who can play with the puck and with an edge, Seider has grown from a draft-day reach to a likely opening-night roster lock. He can thrive on the power play, where the Red Wings have scored the second-fewest goals per game over the last three seasons. Taking instruction from another big-bodied blueliner, Niklas Kronwall, Seider is hoping to develop further into Detroit’s top-pairing defensemen of the future.

Chris Johnston: Escrow set at 17.2% of player salaries

This is quite the chunk of change:

NHL players are expected to see 17.2% deducted from their paycheques for escrow this season. That number was based off of last year’s hockey-related revenue.

The escrow cap drops to 10% next season.— Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) October 12, 2021

The escrow for this season was based on a formula; most estimates were 17.5%-18% so it came in a bit lower at 17.2% per @reporterchris

The escrow % the next 4 years is fixed & set:

21-22: 10%
22-23: 6%
23-24: 6%
24-25: 6% – End of current CBA
25-26: If CBA auto-extended, max 9% https://t.co/yCpCUBn78L— PuckPedia (@PuckPedia) October 12, 2021

Sears discusses Dylan Larkin’s captaincy with Henrik Zetterberg, Nicklas Lidstrom

Great stuff from DetroitRedWings.com’s Ethan Sears this morning:

When Henrik Zetterberg left Detroit, moving home to Sweden after a storied playing career, he made a delivery to Dylan Larkin.

A friend had given Zetterberg a treatment bench to use at home, with the number 40 stitched into it and the captain’s C above it. When Zetterberg retired in 2018, Larkin was still two years away from being officially named the Detroit Red Wings’ captain. Zetterberg decided that didn’t matter.

“To be honest,” Zetterberg told DetroitRedWings.com, “even though he didn’t have the C on his jersey, he’s been the captain for a few years.”

So Zetterberg made an addition to the table. He put the number 71 on it, with the C next to it. When he dropped it at Larkin’s house, he told him that only captains could have the table.

“Well, I’m not the captain,” Zetterberg recalled Larkin saying.

“Well, you’re gonna be the next captain,” Zetterberg replied.
