Red Wings-Panthers quick take: Wings robbed of a point by OT gods, but ‘the process’ was great

The Detroit Red Wings attempted to snap the 7-0-and-0 Florida Panthers’ winning streak as the Wings embarked upon a stretch of 2 games in 2 nights on Friday.

Detroit put together a valiant effort, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to tie the Panthers 2-2 and force overtime on goals by Sam Gagner and Moritz Seider–and 29 stops by an excellent Alex Nedeljkovic–but Alex Barkov snuck behind Bertuzzi, Fabbri and Leddy standing stationary at the Wings’ blueline, and he scored a backhand, top shelf game-winner.

The result was incredibly disappointing, but the process was damn fine.

The Red Wings and Panthers iced the following lines:

The starting lineups consisted of the following players…

In the 1st period…The Red Wings went with “power vs. power” in the Larkin line opposite Barkov and Duclair, with DeKeyser and Seider opposing Ekblad and Weegar, and Nedeljkovic starting opposite Bobrovsky.

The puck was dropped at 7:05 PM–three minutes early–and Larkin drew in opposite Barkov, lost the draw, and Florida was stopped by Seider at center, Florida regained control of the puck, and they worked it into the Wings’ zone.

Detroit countered, Larkin fed Bertuzzi, and he was stopped by Bobrovsky.

The rebound was held in by Seider and chipped wide of the net by Bertuzzi, but he got a close chance;

Rasmussen won the next draw and chipped a pass back to the point, and Namestnikov tipped the Leddy shot wide of the net;

Florida got their first opportunity to score as Staal and Stecher got caught puck-watching, and Bennett fed Tippett for a huge chance that Nedeljkovic stopped sliding across the net. Detroit’s forwards weren’t watching Tippett, either…

The Suter line took over in the offensive zone, got a couple of shot attempts off, and Nedejlkovic stopped one shot by charging out of his net, and was helped by Marc Staal on the Panthers’ second attempt;

By the time the Wings’ fourth line took to the ice, 3 minutes of game time elapsed, and Rowney, Stephens and Gagner cycled well, Gagner jabbed the puck out front and Bobrovsky had to stop a big shot by #89.

Bertuzzi took another shot off the faceoff in the offensive zone, and Detroit continued to battle the Panthers in the Wings’ zone, too, with Barkov stopped by Raymond’s backchecking;

Bertuzzi also made a nice jab blocking a cross-ice Panthers pass in the offensive zone, using phenomenal hand-eye coordination to block a shot.

As John Buccigross noted, the Wings were winning the vast majority of the faceoffs early, and when the Panthers had the puck, Detroit was doing a good job of playing man-on-man defense, ensuring that Nedeljkovic had an easy time over the first 5:30 of the 1st.

Nedeljkovic did make a nice stop off Ekblad from the point, off a faceoff win;

And there wasn’t a lot of flow early, with Nedeljkovic grabbing and holding onto the puck when he had to face Panthers shots.

Off an icing call against the Suter line, Florida got control of the puck, cycled at center, and pushed the puck deep, but Detroit stifled the scoring chance…

And at 6:35 of the 1st, when the first TV timeout hit, the shots were tied 4-4.

When play resumed, the Panthers and Red Wings engaged in a pitched battle for control of the puck, with the Wings’ fourth line getting caught out against Barkov & company, but Seider afforded Detroit a shot block, Florida cycled, and Detroit just stood and waited for the Panthers to get fancy with sticks and bodies negating Florida chances;

Detroit and Florida then traded chances, with Bertuzzi stopped by Bobrovsky, Huberdeau stopped by Nedeljkovic, and Larkin stopped by Bobrovsky as the teams traded breakaway chances…

And very regrettably, the Panthers won a faceoff deep in the Wings’ zone (Rasmussen lost it), Luostarinen tipped a point shot as the Panthers crowded Nedeljkovic’s sightlines, and it was 1-0 in a hurry.

Eetu Luostarinen tipped the Marcus Nutivaara point shot, off the faceoff win by Brandon Montour, at 8:43 of the 1st, making it 1-0 Florida.

The second TV timeout hit at 10:04, and the shots were 6-6, attempts 11-11, and Detroit was leading faceoffs 8-5.

When play resumed, the fourth line took to the ice, cycled, Gagner was cross-checked sans penalty, Rowney blasted a shot wide, and the Wings buzzed, but the Panthers stood tall.

Blashill chose to not go with the Barkov-Larkin matchup, and the Panthers’ scoring line of Reinhart, Bennett and Luostarinen nearly scored on a 4-on-2;

Owen Tippett was stifled by Bertuzzi;

With 8:30 remaining in the 1st, Tippett’s shot was blocked by Dekeyser, Montour sent a shot in on Nedeljkovic, and he gobbled it up;

Florida looked to be gaining momentum as the period progressed, and Detroit had to dig down and regain control of the puck to get back into the game.

Seider made a nice play under pressure to clear the puck after being chased out of the pocket behind the net;

Hronek had a fumble making the same play;

Honestly, the Wings’ fourth line was their best line in terms of cycling the puck deep in Florida’s zone, and Detroit was mostly skating on its back foot;

Raymond gets bumped, Duclair sticks and skates in on the Wings’ net but is blocked off by a stick-less Staal, Panthers cycle, Duclair back door stopped, Verhaege off Staal’s broken stick, cycle cycle cycle, Barkov wide, Larkin’s line backed in…

Changes with 5:15 remaining.— George Malik (@georgemalik) October 29, 2021

Florida looked better and better as the 1st period progressed. At the TV timeout with 5:09 remaining, Florida led in shots 9-7, in attempts 18-12, and Detroit had blocked 8 Panthers attempts.

When play resumed, the Panthers looked fantastic in transition and were speedily chugging up the ice, cycling and regrouping, and Detroit looked slow-footed, which is hard to believe.

Florida managed to get the Wings spread out in their own zone, and Bennett fed Reinhart for a backhander that Nedeljkovic had to reach out to grab;

Rasmussen, Namestnikov and Zadina took to the ice, surrendered a rush, and Namestnikov skated in…And was pulled down.

On the delayed PK, Detroit pulled Nedeljkovic, Larkin and company set up, and the Panthers touched up at 16:44.

Namestnikov skirts Brandon Montour and then draws a penalty #LGRW pic.twitter.com/5lrZQHKysS— Nolan Bianchi (@nolanbianchi) October 29, 2021

Brandon Montour sat at 16:44, for tripping, and on the power play, Bertuzzi, Seider, Raymond, Larkin and Gagner (the bumper) worked together to generate a Larkin chance that Bobrovsky gobbled up…

Florida cleared the next Wings attempt, and the Wings had to scramble back to regain possession of the puck;

Larkin tried to beat 4 Panthers, he almost did so, Seider got the puck from Larkin, Gagner worked it to Bertuzzi, the Wings skated through the perimeter, and Raymond put a shot off Larkin’s toe, and Larkin sent the reverse off a Panther.

Close but no cigar on both chances, with Seider taking an icing call as a result.

With 43 seconds left in the PP, and 1:59 left in the 1st, Detroit needed a change, and Raymond, Larkin and Bertuzzi worked a shot-pass plpay where Larkin chipped the puck off Bobrovsky’s mask;

Detroit changed units late, Leddy chugged up ice for Erne, and the Panthers cleared the puck to center, Fabbri made a horrible pass, Duclair fumbled the puck…

And Nedeljkovic tried to stop the puck by wrapping his legs around the post, and Barkov tipped the loose puck into the net, making it 2-0 Florida just as the power play expired.

Well this is just a terrible sequence of hockey. Fabbri turns it over in the neutral zone, can’t get back, and then Nedeljkovic loses sight of it, allowing Barkov to bang it home. Red Wings trail 2-0 #LGRW pic.twitter.com/dhSkXjTNOP— Nolan Bianchi (@nolanbianchi) October 29, 2021

Florida led 2-0 late in the 1st period thanks to Barkov and Duclair at 18:49.

Gudas did take a penalty for holding at 19:12, and on the power play…

Detroit managed to muck and grind the puck loose on the power play, but Raymond could not keep the puck in, he skated in alone, and BOBROVSKY GLOVED HIS SHOT.

Red Wings 0, Panthers 2, stats after 1 period of play: pic.twitter.com/szpQNbmFaU— George Malik (@georgemalik) October 29, 2021

In the 2nd period…The 2nd period began with the Red Wings on the PP for 1:12, and Dylan Larkin’s PP unit lost the opening draw, Nedeljkovic had to stop a flip shot, and Seider lugged the puck out to center, but the Panthers were able to repel the Red Wings’ neutral zone attack once.

On the second try, Detroit cycled around the perimeter, Raymond turned the puck over, and bang bang, the Panthers cleared the puck again

Detroit changed about 50 seconds into the 1st, and Seider tried to chip the puck in himself, and it did not work, with Florida afforded an easy clear.

Erne, Zadina, Fabbri, Hronek and Leddy then surrendered a shorthanded breakaway to Gudas coming out of the box, and he fired one shot wide, and missed his own rebound.

So that power play was poor.

When play resumed, Hronek battled Verhaeghe off the puck, Detroit pushed the puck deep, and…

Troy Stecher held the wraparound in, he chipped the puck toward the net, and Sam Gagner tipped the puck through Bobrovsky to make it 2-1!

Stecher snipes Sam Gagner’s shin, and that’s the perfect place for a deflection to beat Bobrovsky. Red Wing cut the deficit to 2-1 #LGRW pic.twitter.com/FwfBzMeRZe— Nolan Bianchi (@nolanbianchi) October 30, 2021

Sam Gagner made it 2-1 from Troy Stecher and Mitchell Stephens at 2:15. 2-1.

On the post-goal shift, Tippett got his own chance to score, but he was stifled by Nedeljkovic;

Namestnikov and Erne cycled the puck deep, Seider pinched the puck out into the slot for Zadina, and Detroit was unable to connect…

But the Wings were generating zone time, grinding time, and general chances in the offensive zone, and the Panthers looked to be fumbling the puck…

Until Mason Marchment fed Sam Reinhart, and Reinhart JUST blasted the puck wide of Nedeljkovic, serving notice that the Panthers’ minor blip was just that–a minor blip.

As play continued, Lucas Raymond was hacked and whacked without the puck while skating with Bertuzzi and Larkin;

The Stephens line had another good shift, pushing the Panthers back into their onw zone;

And when Patric Hornqvist tried to tip a rebound behind Alex Nedeljkovic’s pad–illegally, again–Moritz Seider stood up to Hornqvist, taking none of his shit.

The shots were 5-1 in the 2nd period, with 6:09 gone in the 2nd, but the score was 2-1.

When play resumed, John Buccigross was asking former ref Dave Jackson whether the Barkov goal was legal, and Nedeljkovic had to stop a real-time shot off the faceoff;

With poor audio on the broadcast, Jackson seemed to be mumbling.

Pius Suter at least generated a scoring chance off a deep zone faceoff against Jonathan Huberdeau’s line, but Suter, Fabbri and Erne were not having the best games…

The Larkin line returned to the ice shortly afterward, and pumped a couple of point shots (from Nick Leddy) wide of Bobrovsky;

Detroit chose to go with the Stephens line against Barkov and company, and that resulted in in a Barkov shot that Nedeljkovic had to stop smartly, as well as some cycling and grinding by the Panthers’ line;

Buccigross explained that the Wings actually wanted to put the Rasmussen line out opposite Barkov, but that wasn’t working very well match-up wise.

Instead, Larkin was battling Luostarinen and Reinhart and Bennett, and they were getting the better of the match-up.

Florida and Detroit were engaged in some pretty pitched battles for puck possession as the game’s halfway mark approached, and the checking game appealed to Florida just fine.

That’s what happens when you’ve got a lead and a team of grinders who believe in themselves.

Again, the fourth line of Gagner, Stephens and Rowney was by far the Wings’ best, in all three zones, and Stephens almost set up Rowney for a goal, but his flip pass was blocked out of the air by Ekblad.

It was a high stick, but the refs weren’t calling much of anything in the 2nd period.

Larkin, Raymond and Bertuzzi were ALL stopped by Bobrovsky when the returned to the ice, and won an offensive zone faceoff…

And Larkin was visibly frustrated as the game went to a TV timeout with 8:17 remaining in the 2nd period.

When play resumed, the Panthers were battling the puck deep in Detroit’s zone, and the Zadina-Rasmussen line surrendered a GOALPOST opportunity for Hornqvist.

Detroit got lucky there.

Nedeljkovic was really doing a great job with Fabbri, Rasmussen and Zadina struggling…

Florida really took over some 13-and-a-half minutes into the 2nd, and Nedeljkovic made big stops, Seider and DeKeyser were OK together, Florida did flub a couple of passes, and the Fabbri line got backed in, but Detroit’s man-on-man defense afforded Detroit a clear, but not a change;

Seider ultimately helped the Wings get a change, with Erne and DeKeyser passing the puck out of trouble, and with 5:15 remaining in the 2nd, Detroit regrouped;

The Wings were surviving the Panthers’ best, down only by one goal, and that was at least tolerable as Florida took a 12-6 shot lead in the 2nd and a 22-17 lead overall at 15:06.

As play resumed, Florida continued to buzz in the offensive zone, and Detroit worked a ramshackle game through center ice and into the offensive zone, really struggling to keep up with Florida’s foot speed and passing game;

Sadly, Mitchell Stephens headed to the penalty box for holding at 16:23, and on the penalty-kill…

Florida set up easily, with Hornqvist in front of Nedeljkovic, and Huberdeau chipped the puck out front from behind the net, trying to put the puck off the Wings’ goalie, but Seider bailed everybody out with a clear;

Florida continued to cycle hard in the Wings’ zone, but Stecher cleared the puck out of trouble on the Panthers’ second cycle;

Suter was able to take the puck from the Panthers’ power play players twice–once in the offensive and once in the defensive zone–and Detroit mostly did a nice job of killing the penalty.

When Stephens got out of the box, he joined Bertuzzi and Larkin, Hronek tried to set up Larkin, Raymond hopped over the boards, and RAYMOND WAS BLOCKED ON A ONE-TIMER that could have tied the game.

Gudas with a huge block that likely saved a goal.

Going the other way, Carter Verhaeghe fired the puck into Nedeljkovic on a mini-breakaway, and Nedeljkovic stopped his shot;

Fabbri, Rasmussen and Zadina played the final shift of the 2nd period with Leddy and Seider, and they were unable to set up deep, so Verhaeghe was pulled down by Seider…

So Moritz Seider was called for “tripping” at 19:55 of the 2nd period.

In the 3rd period…Detroit began the period on the PK for 1:55.

Stephens, Gagner, DeKeyser and Hronek started the 3rd period, and they won the opening faceoff and cleared the puck down ice.

Florida worked the puck into the Wings’ zone, cycled deep, and surrendered the puck to Gagner, who chipped the puck down ice so that the Wings could get a change.

Ekblad worked the Datsyuk Drop to Duclair, Barkov worked the puck back to Ekblad, Bennett was stifled by Nedeljkovic with Hornqvist nearby, and Florida really set up, with Nedeljkovic stopping a tip and Hornqvist himself, when Staal shoved Hornqvist into him.

With 40 seconds left on the PK, Detroit won a deep zone draw, killed about ten seconds of PK time, and ultimately afforded the Panthers a zone entry, only to clear the puck themselves;

The power play expired with Nedeljkovic gloving a Verhaeghe shot.

As the Red Wings returned to even strength, Larkin’s line lost a deep defensive zone draw, the Panthers worked the puck to the point, and Gudas of all people got a good scoring chance that was fired wide.

At the other end of the ice, Bertuzzi set up Larkin for a turnaround shot that Bobrovsky stifled;

Larkin, Raymond and Bertuzzi cycled the puck to the point, Bertuzzi tried to stuff it out front, and Leddy sent a puck in that Bobrovsky battled as Larkin balled into him, Weegar was blocked, Raymond toe picked, and the fans booed, thinking that Raymond was tripped.

Thankfully, Moritz Seider drew a holding penalty on Owen Tippett at 3:28, affording Detroit a power play.

On the power play, Detroit fumbled the initial draw, and had to grind the puck into the Panthers’ zone, cycle, and then surrender control of the puck to the Panthers;

55 seconds into the PP, Seider set up Bertuzzi, he gave the puck away to Verhaeghe, and Detroit had to regroup;

Bertuzzi, Raymond and Larkin could not establish possession in the offensive zone, despite all their efforts, and the power play looked to be about kaput.

Larkin did chip a pass in deep, but Seider was unable to hold the puck in, pinching deep, and Seider and Larkin played catch at even strength.

Hronek and Seider worked on defense as a pairing, if only for a few seconds, and in all honesty, Nedeljkovic’s puck-handling was better than any skater’s.

6:02 into the 3rd period, the shots were only 2-2 in the period and 26-20 Florida on the night.

As play resumed, the Red Wings battled the puck deep, surrendered a rush to the Panthers, and Stecher and Staal did a nice job of clearing the zone.

Seven minutes in, Nedeljkovic was still getting the best touches of the puck of any of the Red Wings players.

Fabbri did get a jab in on Bobrovsky, but he was shoved forcefully away from the net;

Hronek, Leddy and Zadina, Rasmussen and Namestnikov did a FINE JOB of cycling and jabbing pucks toward Bobrovsky on the next shift, and Namestnikov got cross-checked at the front of the net, affording Detroit another power play;

Sam Bennett sat at 8:00 for crosschecking, and on the power play, Raymond was stifled on a one-timer almost immediately;

Seider worked the puck deep to Larkin, he and Bertuzzi fumbled the puck, but Seider held the puck in, repeatedly, and Larkin’s one-timer was blocked by Forsling;

With 11:15 left in regulation, Detroit did a good job of entering the zone, and Bertuzzi, Raymond, Larkin, Gagner and Seider remained out for a long time, working the puck deep, cycling, and ultimately losing the battle for the puck.

Regrettably, Filip Hronek took a dumb penalty at 9:33, pulling down Gudas while trying to stay on side, and a short 4 on 4 followed.

On the PK, Rasmussen was pulled down in on a breakaway, but nothing was called;

As the PK continued, Barkov set up Ekblad for a fine scoring chance that Nedeljkovic stopped;

Florida cycled, cycled, and Gagner blocked off an Ekblad keep-in;

Stecher was unable to clear past Ekblad, and Suter was tripped at center, no call;

With 8:33 remaining and 6 seconds left in the PK, Detroit chipped the offensive zone blueline faceoff down the ice, Hronek came out of the box, and Nedeljkovic had to make a big stop before Bertuzzi not catching up with the puck yielded an icing against Detroit in flux.

As play resumed, the Panthers tried to back-door the puck into the net, and then Nedeljkovic made TWO BIG STOPS to keep the Wings in the game.

Florida continued to press the Wings, and Seider did a good job of stifling him;

Detroit looked like it was on a PK with 7 minutes remaining, and Hronek had to peel off and regroup as Florida was winning battles for the puck and checking the snot out of the Red Wings, with Huberdeau playing keep-away 200 feet from his net.

6:15 left in the 3rd.

Wild sequence.

The Red Wings were doing their best to hang on and hang in for the final five minutes of the game.

Larkin was STONED by Bobrovsky skating in 2-on-1 with Bertuzzi, who he did not see;

Carter Rowney wrapped around Weegar, and he was steered wide, with Gagner and Stephens battling well, but Stephens fanned on his shot attempt;

Zadina got hacked as he tried to deke in, but the Wings held possession…

AND MORITZ SEIDER HELD THE BLUELINE, HE FIRED A HEAVY, HARD SHOT ON NET, AND PIUS SUTER APPEARED TO TIP THE PUCK DOWN BETWEEN BOBROVSKY’S LEGS.

The goal stood, and the Wings were tied at 2 at 17:19. Suter from Seider and Fabbri. 2-2.

Then Larkin had to help push the net off at the other end (though Owen Tippett was the big pusher) to keep the puck OUT OF NEDELJKOVIC’S NET…

Stephens blasted a heavy shot in and was stopped by Bobrovsky;

Florida cycled, cycled, and cycled some more, in the Wings’ zone with 1:15 remaining, and Detroit looked a bit tired, but Seider blocked a tip-down play, and Detroit cleared the zone;

With 45 seconds remaining, Duclair fed Luostarinen, Florida worked the puck to the point, and Weegar blasted the puck wide…

Suter, Zadina and Fabbri flubbed a chance;

Florida raced in and Duclair could not put the aerial pass in past Nedeljkovic;

Florida put the puck off the side of the net;

And DETROIT FORCED OVERTIME.

IN OVERTIME…

Larkin, Raymond and Leddy started OT, and were backed in, so Nedeljkovic moved the puck up for Raymond, he fed Larkin, off the bench came Seider, and he was blocked off, and had to go chasing the puck…

Fabbri was blocked off by Huberdeau, and Bertuzzi joined the rush, was blocked off, Fabbri had to hook a Panther, and Huberdeau flubbed the pass…

Bertuzzi dove for the puck vs. Forsling, and he missed it….

Nedeljkovic stopped Forsling with the help of the post…

Suter worked the puck deep, with Zadina, and DeKeyser, and Zadina walked slot and was stopped…

With 2:50 remaining, Barkov, Reinhart and Forsling cycled, Zadina was picked, and Ekblad fired wide of the net;

Nedejlkovic worked the puck up ice to DeKeyser, Detroit changed, and with 2:15 remaining, Larkin was picked off;

Eklbad flubbed a Verhaeghe pass;

Ekblad tried to tip the Bennett shot wide;

Leddy fed Larkin, and Larkin was tripped into Bobrovsky;

And we got a whistle as Sam Bennett was sore with 1:49 left.

When play resumed, Bertuzzi, Fabbri and Leddy STOOD UP AT THE BLUELINE AND REGRETTABLY, ALEKSANDR BARKOV CHARGED BEHIND THE THREE STATIONARY MEN, BARKOV GOT THE PASS AND BACKHANDED THE PUCK OVER NEDELJKOVIC.
