Cross Hanas was my favorite player in USA’s game against Hungary last summer, and for a good reason. Tons of skill, and can be creative setting up a teammate. Next step will be becoming more consistent in the WHL. https://t.co/mAOCrglSDW— Steven Ellis (@StevenEllisTHN) October 7, 2020

At pick No. 55, the #RedWings take LW Cross Hanas. 22G, 27A in 60GP last year for Portland. 6-foot-1, 187 pounds. Brian Lawton likened him to a left-handed David Perron.— Stefan Kubus (@StefanKubus) October 7, 2020

We have another Texan off the board. Last I checked, Texas is not in Sweden, but Detroit made the pick anyway. Cross Hanas was No. 84 on my board. There’s some good skill level there, some upside. Needs some refining, but like the raw tools.— Chris Peters (@chrismpeters) October 7, 2020

Hanas is a fine pick. From @MitchLBrown‘s tracking data in the @EPRinkside Draft Guide, Hanas was in the 94th percentile in 5v5 shot assists/60 pic.twitter.com/O7O6LjgsLc— Prashanth Iyer (@iyer_prashanth) October 7, 2020

MLive’s Khan on Hanas:

Hanas (6-1, 167) collected 22 goals and 27 assists in 60 games last season for the Winter Hawks. The left-handed shooter was born in Texas.

Red Line Report said of Hanas: “High energy player with touch around the net. Highly competitive and is willing to battle and pay the price by going very hard to the net. A fast, pinball-style forward who can fly and crash in all zones. Can inspire his ‘mates and get a team going with a shift or two when he’s jumping — tempo changing potential. Uses his size and skillset to protect the puck and get into shooting lanes, constantly working plays to get the puck into prime areas. Has a quick, accurate snapshot with a very fast release. Strong, agile skater, and has the ability to pull away from opponents with acceleration. Moved up and down the lineup in mostly a secondary role this year, and excelled in all of them. A 200-foot player who is very responsible defensively. Effective on back pressure, communicating with his D-men and tracking into proper lane. Is trusted on the PK. Consistent development and goal-scoring ability.”

From CBS Sports:

Hanas was drafted 55th overall by the Red Wings at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft on Wednesday.

A Texas native, Hanas just completed his second season with WHL Portland. While his offensive numbers were a bit underwhelming (22 goals, 49 points in 60 games), Hanas possesses legitimate top-six ability. He’s a highly creative playmaker with the skill set to make something out of nothing in the offensive zone. His skating is just average and his play away from the puck needs a ton of work but Hanas was a wise selection for a Detroit team that is clearly betting on pure talent at this point in the draft.

Here’s more from WXYZ’s Galli:

“It’s something I’ve always kind of worked on in practice, just the unique stuff I work on skill-wise,” Hanas said after getting picked. “I always joked around with my dad, saying ‘Mark my words, I’m gonna do this in a game some time.’ Sure enough, I saw the opportunity to do it this year a couple times and it worked.”

“Thank goodness it worked, but it worked.”
