The Detroit Red Wings faced a streaking Anaheim Ducks team on Sunday evening, hoping to snap Anaheim’s 4-game winning streak.
The Red Wings were able to accomplish their task, but only just, defeating Anaheim 5-4 in overtime.
The Wings built up a 3-0 lead on goals by Kasper, DeBrincat (PPG) and Kane (PPG) in the first 5:06, and after Ryan Strome made it 3-1, Compher made it 4-1 on a 3rd PPG early in the 2nd period…
But Anaheim, which took its pound of flesh in dirty hits to Michael Rasmussen (who left the game thanks to an elbow by Trevor Zegras) and Radko Gudas, among others, the Ducks rallied with one 2nd period and 2 3rd period goals, by Gauthier, Zellweger, and Gauthier again, with 55 seconds remaining, forcing OT.
Thankfully, Jackson Lacombe ripped a puck wide of a wide open net in OT, and Marco Kasper fed Patrick Kane, who charged in alone and five-holed Lukas Dostal to make it 5-4 at 4:00 of overtime.

Detroit goes 1-and-1 on the weekend and takes 3 of 4 points, with 3 more games to be played over the course of the next 6 days.
In pregame warmups, Alex Lyon and Lukas Dostal led their respective teams out onto the ice at Little Caesars Arena:

Sunday lineup vs. Anaheim. ⤵️ pic.twitter.com/nvo2GwRJQh

The starters and scratches were as follows:

In the 1st period, the Ducks started Cutter Gauthier, Robby Fabbri and Mason McTavish up front, with Olen Zellweger and Jacob Trouba on defense, and Lukas Dostal in goal;
Detroit started Elmer Soderblom, Michael Rasmussen and Vladimir Tarasenko up front, with Simon Edvinsson and Albert Johansson on defense, and Alex Lyon in goal.
Rasmussen and McTavish drew in for the opening faceoff and Anaheim won it, chipped and chased, Lyon sent the puck around for Johansson, he was battled to a stop by Gauthier, Tarasenko reversed for Edvinsson, and the Wings struggled to clear the zone, ultimately icing the puck with 32 seconds gone in the 1st.
So Rasmussen took a defensive zone faceoff against Carlsson and won it, Tarasenko tapped it deep and the Wings changed lines at 45 seconds.
Anaheim broke into the Wings’ zone and Seider and Kane cleared for Compher, who worked up the left wing side to DeBrincat, who got off a strong chance on Dostal, who stopped the puck.
The Wings then lost the offensive zone faceoff with the Larkin line on ice, and Anaheim skated into Detroit’s zone, with Troy Terry sending a lateral shot in on Lyon at 1:26.
Compher’s returned to the ice for the faceoff in the D-zone, but he lost the draw, and Lyon had to make a stop, the Ducks retained the puck for a bit, but Holl broke free and DeBrincat charged up the left wing side, Gustafsson held the line, the Wings cycled, and Kane reversed for DeBrincat, but he was unable to control the puck…
So Larkin’s line came out at 2:21, Anaheim blazed up the left wing and then the right wing, and Lyon made a strong glove stop on Isac Lundestrom.
Lyon just grabbed a wide shot off the next faceoff loss, but Detroit won the third faceoff in the d-zone, and Kasper and Larkin raced up the right wing, Larkin circled back, chipped a shot toward the net, and it wsa blocked, but Larkin poked the puck away, Raymond circled and cycled and MARCO KASPER SCORED A GOREGEOUS GOAL OFF A SKATE REDIRECTION OF A RAYMOND PASS.

Kasper scored from Raymond at 3:11 of the 1st, skate deflection in the slot, 1-0 Detroit.
As play continued, Lyon made a sharp stop on a slot shot from Anaheim at 3:40…
On the bump-up shift, Edvinsson, Rasmussen and Tarasenko took to the ice and worked the puck up ice, Anaheim chipped the puck into Detroit’s zone, and Tarasenko gave the puck to Rasmussen, and Soderblom was tripped into Dostal at 4:21, and both Lundestrom and Dumoulin were called for tripping, giving the Red Wings a 5-on-3.
On the power play, Detroit won the opening draw, and Detroit worked the puck to Seider, Seider fed it to Kane, he lateralled to DeBrincat, the puck bounced off Dostal to Larkin, and DeBrincat didn’t score on the first chance, but he put the rebound home!

DeBrincat from Larkin and Kane at 4:29, left-side rebound jam, 2-0 Detroit.
The power play continued, and Kane fed Seider, back to Kane, Kane shot goal! On the Red Wings’ 7th shot, Dostal was partially screened by DeBrincat, and Kane just ripped a shot off a Duck and into the net top shelf. Kane scored at 5:06.

Sadly, Albert Johansson and Frank Vatrano went into the penalty box for offsetting roughing and unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, respectively, after Vatrano chipped the puck into Johansson’s groin post-whistle, and the Wings scrummed around him at 5:24.
On the 4-on-4, Larkin was blocked off on a chance in the offensive zone;
Anaheim was able to generate possession and control in Detroit’s zone some 6:00 into the 1st, and they ended up backing off to make a line change, which didn’t work as Seider intercepted a pass, passed across to Edvinsson, and Compher fed Edvinsson, Kane worked at the blueline and was bumped out to center, Anaheim raced in, Karlsson fed Zegras, and he fired a shot wide of Lyon…
Anaheim re-set in its defensive zone, and skated up into Detroit’s zone, but Tarasenko made a good check, and DeBrincat was unable to set him up…
So Zegras sent a boomer in on Lyon, who made a good stop, and DeBrincat concluded the 4-on-4 by carrying the puck out to center ice and into the Ducks’ zone…
And the teams exchanged 3-on-2’s, with Lyon making a fine stop on Robby Fabbri to conclude the pre-TV timeout portion of the 1st period.
After the TV timeout, Lyon made a tremendous stop with his toe off a lost defensive zone faceoff, but Ryan Strome fired the rebound high and over both Dylan Larkin and Lyon to make it 3-1.

— Victory+ (@victoryplustv) February 23, 2025
Strome scored from Terry and Vatrano at 8:24 1st period, 3-1, slot shot over Lyon’s glove.
On the bump-up shift, the Rasmussen line was brought back out, and Chiarot generated a shot opportunity on Dostal;
Lyon made another good stop on a Trouba bomb from the point at 10:00;
Anaheim had a lot of confidence and was possessing the puck, carrying play at times, and confidently breaking through the neutral zone and into Detroit’s zone…
While the Red Wings had some trouble getting through center ice, and were a little turnover-prone.
By 11:47, the Ducks actually led in shots 11-9 and attempts 15-11.
When play resumed after a TV timeout, Kane blasted a Compher pass just wide of the net, Compher deked to DEBRINCAT and he HIT THE GOALPOST…
Berggren, Motte and Veleno got a rare shift with 7:00 remaining in the period, and they set up Gustafsson for a point shot that was blocked, and then they made easy work of the Ducks’ pressure in the Wings’ defensive zone.
Lyon, who was coming out of the net quite a bit to direct traffic, was helping and not harming the Wings’ attack, but Anaheim continued to cycle well and possess the puck with aplomb…
In no small part thanks to some Red Wings turnovers and unforced errors.
Raymond then set up Larkin for a FANTASTIC 2-on-1, but Larkin missed the net…
Anaheim’s forecheck was very good, and they forced a turnover by Holl, but DeBrincat mashed the puck away from Anaheim with a heavy check…
Lyon then made TWO big stops as Lundestrom, Fabbri and McTavish cycled in deep vs. the Seider pairing and a tired Compher line;
Kasper got smoked by Johnston in the Wings’ end, but he bounced back up, and helped Larkin and Raymond cycle in the offensive zone for a bit…
Then Raymond got back to both diffuse a defensive situation and avoid Troy Terry’s attempt to take Raymond’s head off;
Mickey Redmond told us that Patrick Kane and Gudas had some discussions after Gudas cracked Kane in the back with a cross-check…
With 33.7 remaining, Veleno lost a draw at center ice, and after a commercial timeout in which Alex Tanguay felt that the Wings were chasing the game too much, the Larkin line came out for a short shift, but Larkin kept losing faceoffs, and Detroit had to reset as the period expired.
1st period stats:

In the 2nd period, the Wings won the opening draw, and had to regroup at center before Rasmussen skated the puck into the zone, Johansson held the line and fluttered a shot toward Dostal that Elmer Soderblom sent just wide, and the Wings changed 45 seconds in;
Zegras skated into the Wings’ zone, rimmed the puck to the point, and Compher took the puck up into Anaheim’s territory, Kane was held up but battled and helped DeBrincat and Compher cycle, and DeBrincat was dumped by Helleson, who sat down for an interference call at 1:19.
On the power play, Larkin won the draw to Seider, who reversed to Raymond, to Kane lw side, to Raymond lw half boards, Kane left point shot wide, DeBrincat reverse picked off by Lacome and skated in by Lundestrom, who was blocked off by Seider…
DeBrincat to Kane through center by Seider, for Larkin, up for DeBrincat, but the Ducks’ Dostal took the loose puck and held on with 1:16 left in the PP and 2:04 gone in the 2nd.
The 2nd unit took to the ice and Compher won his draw to Gustafsson, Tarasenko gave Gustafsson a pass that yielded a shot off Dostal’s mask, and the Wings mucked the puck to Compher, who scored the 4-1 PPG! Rasmussen screened Dostal and Compher took the rebound and jammed it home.

J.T. Compher scored at 2:14, from Gustafsson, rebound snap shot in the slot…4-1 Detroit.
On the bump-up shift, Edvinsson and Kasper nearly connected for a passing play that reversed into Dostal, Raymond blasted a puck into Dostal, and Kasper fed Raymond in the slot and the two battled it out with the Ducks’ defense, reset at center, and Veleno centered for Raymond, who fell in the slot.
Anaheim got its chances to cycle the puck and push it into Detroit’s zone, however, and while the Wings were mostly utilizing three lines, the Veleno line got a good chance set up for Soderblom in the slot, a flying Rasmussen sent a shot to the point for Chiarot, and he blasted a shot on Dostal as well.
Detroit led 6-0 in shots in the 2nd period some 4:40 in, and when Anaheim threatened, Detroit blocked the Ducks’ shots and returned to the offensive zone, where DeBrincat jabbed a puck off Dostal’s head.
More blocks, and 6:00 in, Larkin had a shot blocked by Dumoulin into the crowd…
Then Berggren sent a long shot off the crossbar at 6:20;
The Veleno line did ice the puck, and Lacombe sent a shot off the outside of the net’s goalpost and out of play…
Sadly, after a TV timeout, Jackson Lacombe just ripped a shot toward the net from the half boards on the left wing side, and the puck bounced off Cutter Gauthier’s elbow and into the net.

Gauthier scored from Lacombe and McTavish at 7:04. Off the elbow from a side-boards slapper. 4-2.
Detroit attempted to resume pressure on the Ducks on the bump-up shift and thereafter, but Anaheim defended well and attempted to attack with poise, so the Wings had their hands full on the second night of a back-to-back…
Gudas and Lacombe got the Ducks’ 2nd and 3rd shots on Lyon in short succession, with the Larkin line looking a little tired, honestly…
Zegras fed Carlsson and then Killorn, but Compher was strong on the backcheck, DeBrincat fed Kane through center ice, to DeBrincat it went, and Dostal had to make a tough save on #93;
Albert Johansson and Simon Edvinsson helped the Wings sustain possession, and then prevented Zellweger from getting to a rebound, though Zellweger deked and dangled past where Johansson should have been.
Again, the Veleno line had a good shift, with Motte hitting a Ducks D and pissing off McTavish, who left his “post” and afforded Veleno and Berggren a pass back to Chiarot and Seider, who sent a boomer in on Dostal at 10:42.
When play resumed after a TV timeout, the Veleno line got another shift, and worked with the Wings’ 3rd pair of Holl and Gustafsson, but they did a good job of disrupting the Ducks’ attack.
Marco Kasper did a fantastic job of checking GUDAS and Kasper tipped point shot through as Raymond absorbed a cross-check from Gudas, who was pissed off by the reverse hit from the Wings’ Austrian forward.
Then Compher, Kane and DeBrincat did a fine job of cycling into the Ducks’ end and keeping the puck in deep, generating zone time and some pressure that could have yielded scoring chances, had Detroit chosen to shoot instead of pass.
Even Justin Holl got a wraparound chance on Dostal as the Wings pressed for a 5th goal…
The Larkin line was tenacious and mostly “north” of center on the next shift;
Compher was really flying on the ice during his shift, and he was facilitating pressure for Kane and DeBrincat, as well as helping his defensemen check, having a good all-round game;
Lyon made a very, very good goal-line stand on a Duck, but Michael Rasmussen got shouldered in the head by Trevor Zegras, sans call, and Rasmussen exited the game to be evaluated by the training staff.
Michael Rasmussen hurt after this hit to the head by Trevor Zegras.

No call on the play. Rasmussen to the dressing room. #LGRW pic.twitter.com/h03Va9uqVa
Todd McLellan was furious with the refereeing staff, but they chose to let it go, linesmen included, and the Wings were down another center.
As play resumed, DeBrincat, Compher and Kane tried to set each other up, but both Compher and Kane were dumped as they tried to make plays, and again, the refs just sort of examined the checks to the backs of both players and saw no fouls.
The Red Wings weren’t doing well on faceoffs, and of course what did they come out and do on an icing? Zegras tried to score on a wraparound, and then jabbed, jabbed and jabbed some more on Lyon, drawing a scrum.
A good Larkin backcheck prevented a back-door goal with just over a minute left in the 2nd period;
As Anaheim cycled, Lyon got a good stop in on Vatrano with a partial block from Larkin…
And there was a scrum in which Gudas and Lacombe got a power play for the Ducks because they attacked Raymond and Johansson, who got a minor for roughing at 19:14.
On the PK, Anaheim won the blueline draw and cycled, and Zegras was booed, but Troy Terry put a puck off the post…and COMPHER charged up shorthanded, breaking away, but he was STONED by DOSTAL in the final seconds…
AND THERE WAS A VICIOUS SCRUM IN WHICH VELENO AND MCTAVISH WENT AT EACH OTHER, ZEGRAS BITCHED AT COMPHER, HOLL SHOVED TERRY, and every player the Ducks had on the 5-on-4 advantage tried to get an advantage on the Red Wings, all after Chiarot elbowed Vatrano high.
Definition of cheap shot.

Hits 26-19 Anaheim;
Giveaways 12-11 Detroit;
Takeaways 3-3;

Faceoffs 22-21… pic.twitter.com/tUYQsuJato
In the 3rd period, the Red Wings still had 1:14 of penalty-killing time to worry about, so revenge was on the back burner.
Compher, Motte, Edvinsson and Johansson took to the ice for the PK, lost the initial faceoff, and Anaheim raced up ice, but Motte bounced a puck out of the air and pushed the Ducks back to their blueline.
Anaheim chugged in and chipped the puck right out of play at 33 seconds, affording Detroit a quick change;
Veleno and Kasper came out with Seider and Edvinsson, and the Ducks pushed deep, Leo Carlsson swung it to the point, Strome fed Vatrano, blockered away Lyon, Lacombe fed Zegras, to Vattrano, to Lacombe, to Vatrano, shot from Carlsson blocked by Kasper, then Zegras shot wide in the slot alone, and Kasper raced away as the PK expired…
But the Ducks stood up to him, with Gudas bumping a Wing, and Raymond cycled to Berggren, who was dumped away from play, and the refs kept yelling, “Get off, get off him!”
So Larkin was playing on an interim line with Berggren and Raymond…
Anaheim got a good chance as a deke-and-dangle occurred, but the Wings stopped that;
At the other end, Kane fed DeBrincat who fanned wide, and then Compher, who was blocked…
Johansson fed Kane, he lost the puck, regrouped, and pushed it deep, but the Ducks cleared the puck down the ice, so Detroit regrouped and changed at 3:11.
Veleno worked with Soderblom and Berggren, and Soderblom got hit from behind by Ross Johnston…
Soderblom did a good job of centering the puck to Veleno, who jabbed a loose puck in on Dostal, who made a smart stop;
Larkin, Raymond and Kasper were reunited, and they watched Gudas smack Raymond from behind after tripping him, Gudas went after Raymond again, and Detroit went 6-on-5 ahead of a power play in which Gudas got pissed and cross-checked Edvinsson in the face.
Gudas was only called for one of his three or four penalties, being called for tripping at 4:53.
On the power play, Larkin won the draw to Raymond to Kane, blocked, Kane retrieved to Larkin to Seider blocked Larkin to Raymond drop pass to Seider lateral to Kane rt point to Larkin rt wing to DeBrincat blocked and cleared Dumoulin.
Kane walked through center for DeBrincat to Raymond blocked out to center.
Raymond to Larkin lw side chip around for Kane held by Killorn then DeBrincat to Raymond to Kane, rt half to DEBRINCAT STONED BY DOSTAL…
Anaheim clears, Detroit’s 2nd unit comes out with 51 left PP.
Gustafsson works it to Compher, blocked off by Lundestrom and cleared down the ice.
Gustafsson to Kasper, lateral for Tarasenko, to Compher, for Kasper blocked off Tarasenko for Berggren cycling around the goal for Tarasenko for Gustafsson, no open lanes, Tarasenko to Berggren shot high and wide, and the PP expired.
7:00 gone in the 3rd period.
Anaheim then set up in the Wings’ zone vs. Soderblom, Veleno and Motte, and Lyon had to make a blocker stop;
Tyler Motte was hit by Vatrano from behind at 8:15, no call there because Motte had the puck on his stick, clearing the zone;
Zellweger fired a bomb in on Lyon who stopped the shot smartly, and Seider skated out to center, flipped it in and chased, battled 2 Ducks, he centered off Dostal, and got back to stop Fabbri…
The Larkin line had an OK shift, battling Gudas and the Zegras line for zone time;
With 10:00 gone in the 3rd, the crowd was booing both Zegras and Gudas;
Motte fed Berggren for a good cycle and point shot Gustafsson that whistled wide of Dostal’s head, and the fourth line continued to cycle, with Holl blasting a shot wide, Gustafsson sustaining possession and Berggren taking an elbow to the face by Trouba.
No call.
Off the next offensive zone draw, a faceoff win by Larkin, Raymond blasted a shot into Dostal’s belly, and then Strome won the next draw…
So the Ducks broke out and Terry had to be gloved by Lyon, illustrating the importance of winning those faceoffs, even when you’re nearly 200 feet from your goal.
When play resumed after a TV timeout, Larkin won two draws, first in the d-zone, then at center ice, but the Ducks pressured Detroit and forced Lyon to make a good blocker punch-away….
Larkin and Kasper worked the puck in deep to get a change with 7:50 remaining…
The Ducks were really playing “heavy hockey” against Johansson and Edvinsson, too, trying to beat them up.
Gustafsson made a great block on Leo Carlsson with 6:34 left in the 3rd, stifling a shot from the right wing faceoff dot;
Veleno got a good shot off on Dostal with 6:00 left, but the Ducks raced back the other way, and Seider stood up on Zegras;
Raymond bumped Gudas on the forecheck as well, and a, “Let’s Go Red Wings!” chant began…
Lacombe then tried to hit Seider in the Wings’ zone, and he reversed the hit;
With 5:05 remaining, Kane couldn’t quite get through Helleson as he swiped a loose puck–Kane was getting to tons of loose pucks, but was having trouble using his upper-body strength to out-skate the Ducks’ defenders…
Off a bad icing call with 3:56 left, Anaheim pulled Dostal down 2 goals, hoping to tie the game at even strength.
6-on-5 against, Compher drew in and tied up the draw, but Anaheim controlled it, and the Wings blocked a shot and Edvinsson sent the puck wide of the empty net for an icing with 3:41 left.
Compher took the next draw in the d-zone and tied it up, but Anaheim muscled it back to the point, cycled along the perimeter, and Detroit changed lines after clearing the zone.
Terry was blocked off, but McTavish fed Zegras for a hig-and-wide chance, and Lyon stopped McTavish with 3:00 left, and a scrum ensued with Terry and Chiarot being combatants in some pushing and shoving…
So Anaheim called its timeout.
Larkin, Kasper and Raymond came out with Seider and Chiarot, the Ducks won the draw, and they cycled along the perimeter, Seider cleared the zone and sent it just wide of the empty net for an icing call with 2:40 remaining.
Again, Larkin drew in for a faceoff that was scrambled back for Trouba, who hit a body, Anaheim continued to cycle along the perimeter and sadly Zellweger was able to score on Lyon to make it 4-3 at 17:44.
Zellweger scored from Carlsson and Fabbri at 17:44, through Lyon’s glove, slap shot from the point, 4-3.
Detroit worked the puck down low as the Ducks pulled Dostal again with 2:00 left, Anaheim cycled, DeBrincat, Kane, Compher, Johansson and Edvinsson battled the puck out to center, but Zegras chipped it into the Wings’ end…
Johansson and Edvinsson could not clear, but DeBrincat found Kane, the puck was dumped down the ice, Kane jammed vs. 3 Ducks, and then Kane went off with 1:10 left…
Detroit changed and the Larkin line worked with Seider and Chiarot, but with 52.5 left, Anaheim tied the game 4-4 as Gauthier sent a backhand shot over Lyon’s shoulder to tie the game.

IN OVERTIME, Larkin won the draw but Seider broke his stick so he headed to the bench, Detroit regrouped through center ice and Larkin skated in and fired an un-screened shot on Dostal, who made an easy stop through his belly…
Larkin, Kane and Seider then took an offensive zone faceoff vs. McTavish, Larkin won it but the Ducks stole it, walked in and Terry fired a shot high and wide, Seider battled Terry…
Larkin and Kane chugged up 2-on-1, and Kane was stopped by Dostal as the Wings changed up with 4:05 left…
McTavish gave it to Dostal to Lacombe, Kasper could not stop Carlsson, and Anaheim dumped, Kasper and Edvinsson chased, DeBrincat slid it to Edvinsson, and the Wings turned it over…
Carlsson and Gauthier worked into the zone, Edvinsson stopped Gauthier, DeBrincat worked up the rw with Kasper to the LW and he fans on the shot…
DeBrincat finds Kasper for a shot off a skate wide, and Gustafsson backs up with 2:55 left…
