Red Wings-Jets quick take: Larkin 2G, Seider 3A in gutsy Red Wings win in Winnipeg

The Detroit Red Wings took on the NHL-best 27-11-and-2 Winnipeg Jets on Saturday, attempting to add to Winnipeg’s 0-1-and-1 streak while pushing the McLellan winning streak to 4 games.

On Saturday night, one could argue that the Red Wings rode their 1st period effort to a 4-2 victory over the Winnipeg Jets, but the game is not that simple, and the Red Wings were better than that.

Dylan Larkin opened the scoring only 6:25 into the game with a power play goal, and Lucas Raymond scored a PP marker 4:33 into the 2nd to make it 2-0, but the Jets scored only a minute-and-change later to make it 2-1 on a Josh Morrissey goal, and things were tight after that.

Alex DeBrincat made it 3-1 at 7:14 of the 3rd, but the Jets hung in there and stuck around, with Ehlers scoring the 3-2 marker at 16:45 of the 3rd…

But with 28.4 seconds left, after some masterful defensive work, Dylan Larkin score the empty-net gamer from Seider, who had 3 assists on the night.

Alex Lyon stopped 21 of 23 shots, got help from 4 goalposts, and was generally very good, and the Wings had a superb stem-to-stern effort from the entire roster.

In pregame warm-ups, Alex Lyon and Connor Hellebuyck led their teams out onto the ice at the Canada Life Centre…

Winnipeg posts their lineup far before game time, but they do post a line chart right before the game…

The Red Wings post their lineup just before game time:

FYI:

The starters and scratches were as follows:

In the 1st period, Detroit started Tarasenko, Compher and Berggren opposite the Jets’ top line of Vilardi, Scheifele and Connor, with Gustafsson and Holl on defense for the Red Wings, Stanley and Pionk on defense for the Jets, and in goal, Lyon opposed Hellebuyck.

Compher tied up the draw and Holl pushed it shallowly to Stanley, who chipped, Gustafsson and Holl chased, and cleared the zone.

Scheifele circled back and dumped the puck in, Holl and Gustafsson iced the puck at 34 seconds, and Winnipeg made its first line change.

Detroit lost the deep defensive zone draw, but Gustafsson walked the puck out to center, and the Wings changed on the fly as Perfetti and company tried to push the puck into Detroit’s end.

Lowry, Perfetti and the Jets battled Copp, DeBrincat and Kane, with Chiarot holding the puck in and Kane jabbing the puck deep, with the Jets taking a penalty…

On the delayed 6-on-5, Larkin hopped over the boards and Chiarot blasted a shot into the corner, Larkin fed Chiarot, he was stopped, Copp was blocked, Larkin was blocked and then fired a shot into the netting, and Detroit headed to the PP at 1:58.

Morrissey sat for holding.

On the power play, Seider, Kane and Raymond cycled on the perimeter, DeBrincat put a puck off Hellebuyck, the Wings retrieved and Larkin fed Kane, Seider fed Kane, he walked out of the half boards to Seider, to Raymond it went, he was poked at by Pionk, and the Jets cleared the puck down the ice.

Compher dialed in for a defensive zone draw due to a high stick by a Red Wing, the Wings won the draw and pushed the puck up ice, but Barron and Namestnikov worked a 3-on-1 and Lyon made a HUGE SHORTHANDED STOP to keep the game 0-0.

Gustafsson walked to the Wings’ blueline and dropped it for Copp, to Compher and Tarasenko it went, Berggren buzzed and Rasmussen battled, Tarasenko sent a shot wide and Gustafsson fired the puck deep, where Rasmussen was DOUBLE-TEAMED and Rasmussen came off the ice injured…

No penalty was called, and the Red Wings’ power play expired.

After the power play, Edvinsson tried to set up Motte deep in the slot, but the Jets stifled Detroit’s attempt;

Veleno, Larkin and Raymond cycled the puck up the ice and Veleno blasted a one-timer wide of Hellebuyck after Lyon made a big stop at the Wings’ end of the ice…

And Iafallo was called for shoveling away a Red Wings player’s stick at 5:31.

On the power play, Larkin won the faceoff to Kane, Kane fed Larkin in the slot, and Larkin nearly scored, but Hellebuyck held the goal line…

Winnipeg won the next draw but Kane kept the puck in play, working the perimeter, and Larkin’s stuff job was stopped, as was DeBrincat’s;

Then Kane jabbed a shot in on Hellebuyck, he was stopped, but Dylan Larkin ripped a gigantic shot through Hellebuyck to score on the power play off feeds from Seider and Raymond.

Larkin scored the PPG at 6:25 from Raymond and Seider. 1-0 Detroit.

Just as encouragingly, Rasmussen returned to the ice after being double-hit by Lowry and a teammate a couple of minutes earlier for the bump-up shift;

The Jets’ crowd tried to wake their team up as the 8-minute mark passed, but Copp and Kane raced up the ice and fired shots wide of Hellebuyck, Larkin drop-passed the puck for Veleno and they could not convert, and when the Jets went the other way, Logan Stanley was stifled by Lyon at 8:18.

With Detroit leading the shot attempts 18-2 and shots 10-2, Winnipeg tried to pry its way back into the game, but Detroit defended well, and the Jets were just…scatterbrained.

Kasper was called offside at 9:13…

Berggren, Tarasenko and Compher then took to the ice, worked the puck back to Johansson, and he worked with Edvinsson to generate a shot attempt on Hellebuyck…

Ehlers busted through Larkin, Raymond and Veleno, but he spun out and sent the puck back to no one, through his two point men;

Seider grabbed a puck that popped up into his face and sent it up to Kane, who cleared the zone;

Kane fed Copp in front of Hellebuyck, but the puck bounced into Copp’s feet, so he could not bury it;

Rasmussen was responsible as the last man back, helping Edvinsson and Johansson clear the zone twice…

Logan Stanley did hit the goalpost and then the referee with about 12:30 gone;

Raymond got a chance at the other end, as did Chiarot, with a slap shot;

Again, Johansson and Edvinsson were very responsible, with Johansson setting up a 2-on-1 where Copp had to shoot and shot high and wide, but Kane took a shot on Hellebuyck off the rebound, and when Winnipeg went the other way…

Perfetti hit the goalpost in the same spot as Stanley did…

Then Kasper, Motte and Rasmussen tipped a puck in on Hellebuyck, Kasper buzzed deep, and Chiarot walked the line, but was blocked by Kupari;

Larkin, Veleno and Raymond cycled deep and Johansson blasted a shot wide…

And Detroit was called for interference at the blueline, with Johansson bumping Barron at 15:52.

On the penalty-kill, Copp won the draw to Chiarot and Seider, who chipped the puck down the ice…

The Jets walked the puck up the ice and Ehlers dropped to Morrissey, he fed Connor, Scheifele fed Vilardi and then the puck went to Perfetti, but Compher made a good block on Connor…

Lyon made a good stop on Morrissey;

Vilardi was stopped by Lyon;

Morrissey’s stick broke, but he was able to defend against Copp with his feet;

Rasmussen blocked the Jets’ dump-in and Motte nearly broke free;

Niederreiter, Perfetti, Pionk and Iafallo cycled, Lyon made a stop, and Pionk was blocked by Rasmussen, and then fired a shot wide, affording Detroit a successful penalty-kill.

With 1:15 left, Raymond, Veleno and Larkin cycled and Raymond tapped a shot in on Hellebuyck, which was toe-stopped;

Miller headed off to the locker room after blocking a DeBrincat shot that ramped up off his stick into his own face;

Lyon made a couple of good stops to stifle Kyle Connor and company with 1.1 left in the 1st, and the Jets petitioned for more time on the clock, but Larkin and Lowry dialed in for the faceoff, tied it up, and with the Jets going 6-on-5, Detroit tried to but could not score an empty-netter.

In the 2nd period, Larkin’s line started opposite the Scheifele line, and they won the initial faceoff, chipped and chased, and regrouped, surrendering a long point shot to Neal Pionk, who was stopped easily by Lyon 20 seconds in.

Winnipeg was rather evidently skating with better puck possession, even without defenseman Colin Miller, who was injured…

Gustafsson made a good stop on Pionk, then Lyon stopped Lowry in tight;

Winnipeg continued to cycle 2 minutes into the 2nd, and Lyon made a big stop on Iafallo…

Namestnikov tried to stuff it past Lyon, but he poke checked the chance away 2:40 into the 2nd…

Detroit began to right itself by taking away Winnipeg’s time and space, “fronting” the Jets and intercepting their passes, and Winnipeg’s Gustafsson got called for tripping up Tyler Motte at the Jets’ blueline, affording Detroit a power play at 3:33.

On the power play, Larkin drew in and won the initial faceoff, but Iafallo and the Jets cleared their zone;

So Seider set up DeBrincat and Kane to walk the puck deep, Raymond helped cycle to Seider and Kane, Seider dropped deep for Raymond, and the Jets fired the puck over the glass, but it was deflected by Patrick Kane.

Larkin and Seider tried to work a “jam play” off a faceoff in the Jets’ zone, with Seider attempting to stuff the puck through Hellebuyck…It did not work.

So Larkin lost the next draw, Detroit wrestled the puck free and Kane went high, Seider fed RAYMOND AND HIS SHOT WAS TIPPED THROUGH HELLEBUYCK TO GIVE THE RED WINGS A 2-0 LEAD.

Lucas Raymond scored the 2-0 goal from Seider and Kane at 4:33 of the 2nd period. PPG.

The Jets had a good bump-up shift, but Motte was able to clear the Jets’ cycling puck, and the Wings sadly gave up a 2-1 goal at 5:48, with Josh Morrissey scoring on a deflection through Lyon’s 5-hole.

Morrissey scored from Scheifele and Niederreiter at 5:48. 2-1.

Detroit’s bump-up shift was just okay, with Gustafsson, Edvinsson, Kane, Copp and DeBrincat being tied up in their own zone for a significant period of time before changing 7 minutes in…

And LYON made a BIG STOP on Vilardi at 7:11.

When play resumed after a TV timeout, Larkin, Veleno and Raymond ground out the puck down low in the Jets’ zone for a bit, but the Jets raced back up the ice, fumbled through center ice, and Connor was blocked off by the Wings, but only to center ice, where Detroit changed against the trapping Jets…

Kasper, Rasmussen and Motte had a really good shift with Seider and Chiarot, 9:11 into the 2nd, but the puck was deflected over Hellebuyck…

Winnipeg was blocking or deflecting Red Wings shots wide, and Detroit was tipping pucks off their own players as well, so the Jets were pushing incredibly hard to tie the game, and Detroit was being tested.

Scheifele raced up 3-on-2 but was blocked off by Chiarot…

Raymond, Larkin and Veleno had a good shift with Johansson and Edvinsson, cycling, regrouping to defend at center and then racing back into the Jets’ zone;

Lowry was stifled by Edvinsson in the Wings’ slot 11:00 into the 2nd;

Morgan fired the puck off the outside of the net as the Jets really pushed nearly 12 minutes in, but Detroit maintained its defensive posture;

Lyon also made a nice stop on Logan Stanley with 12:26 gone…

Moritz Seider poked the puck around the back boards and was given Compher’s stick as the Jets’ top line of Scheifele and company cycled deep in the Wings’ end, but Detroit managed to survive the situation;

Lyon made a good stop on Iafallo at 14:00 of the 2nd, after DeBrincat backchecked quite well;

Kane, Larkin and Veleno forced Hellebuyck to seal the puck for a faceoff with 5:41 remaining in the 2nd;

When play resumed after a TV timeout, Larkin fed a puck off Hellebuyck, but it went off the post and stayed out;

Holl made a TREMENDOUS block with his stick on Scheifele’s shot attempt in the Wings’ slot;

Connor, Scheifele and Iafallo remained out on the ice as Berggren and company remained on the ice, and Lyon made a simple save to afford Detroit a line change with 3:52 left in the 2nd…

Detroit was doing a LOT OF CHASING of the Jets’ puck possession game for the vast majority of the 2nd period, however, and Lyon had to make a couple of good plays as Edvinsson and Johansson had a bad shift with 2:40 remaining;

Winnipeg was PROTESTING everything, too, begging for penalties, lamenting icing calls against, all sorts of things.

Even Tarasenko was able to block a Perfetti pass once and then pass the puck to Copp and Compher for another defensive clear;

And the Jets tried to wrap the puck around the net to end the 2nd, but time expired–and Lyon made a good stop.

In the 3rd period: Larkin won the faceoff to Seider, Veleno chipped, Larkin and Raymond chased, but the Jets broke free as the Scheifele line battled the puck back to Pionk, he was blocked by Larkin, and Seider joined the 3-on-2 to challenge Hellebuyck with a fine chance by #53.

Lyon made an astute stop after Edvinsson got backed in, but Edvinsson smartly chipped the puck up the boards to stifle any sustained Jets momentum;

Mostly, the Wings were staying close to the Jets’ players, and counter-attacking quite well, finally sustaining some time in Winnipeg’s zone after a second period where that was a sparse occurrence.

Barron ripped a shot wide on the rush, but he could have walked in on Lyon, and that was a concern for the Kasper line…

On the next shift, however, Larkin, Chiarot, Veleno and Raymond cycled, and Raymond made a beautiful backhander that Hellebuyck had to stop with his belly.

The Wings were a little vulnerable on the right wing side, and Niederreiter and Morrissey had to be stopped by Lyon off wing rushes;

Detroit gave up a puck to Pionk, but Motte made a fine pass to Kasper and after his chip shot on Hellebuyck, the Wings generated something I didn’t expect–a scrum in front of Hellebuyck, because the Jets were getting tired of the Wings’ offense.

The Larkin line had both a very good forechecking shift and a very good backchecking shift vs. Scheifele and Connor some 6:30 into the 3rd;

Compher swiped the puck and had a good chance nearly 7:00 in, but the Jets’ positional defense shut him down;

And Patrick Kane and Alex DeBrincat tapped the puck to each other and the puck popped off the skate of Morrissey to afford Detroit their 3-1 marker.

The goal was DeBrincat from Kane at 7:14. 3-1 Detroit.

After a solid bump-up shift, Compher, Tarasenko and Berggren had a superb shift 10:00 into the 3rd…

Edvinsson and Johansson were blocking shots on the next shift, and THE PUCK WENT OFF THE GOALPOST BEHIND LYON at 10:45…

Sadly, after a shift of fine backchecking, Alex DeBrincat was called for slashing at 11:43, affording Winnipeg a power play.

On the penalty-kill, Larkin lost the initial faceoff, and the Jets worked the perimeter, but Detroit blocked the initial shot by Morrissey, and Larkin blasted the puck down the ice and went off for a change;

Copp and Compher joined Seider and Chiarot and cleared the puck easily, with Chiarot almost feeding Compher for a breakaway;

Lyon made an intriguing glove-and-pass play to Rasmussen and then Seider chipped the puck down the ice for another clear;

Perfetti raced in and was battling Edvinsson, Pionk, Iafallo and company cycled, but Detroit blocked the shots, Lyon made a nice stop and lost his stick, Perfetti hit the goalpost for the FOURTH TIME, and the Wings killed the penalty.

6:06 remained in regulation time.

Detroit then iced the puck, but Compher, Berggren and Tarasenko cleared the puck once, Seider helped clear the puck a second time, and as the Scheifele line skated heavy minutes, Connor was blocked by Seider…

Even Rasmussen, Motte and Kasper were playing competently and sharply as they defended the Jets’ top line;

Logan Stanley’s shot was tipped over the net with Lyon down in the butterfly, Winnipeg worked off the boards but Rasmussen chipped, Kasper chased, and Motte battled to afford Detroit some more time with 4:00 left in the 3rd…

Sadly, Ehlers tipped a point shot behind Lyon to make it 3-2 with 3:14 left in the 3rd.

Ehlers scored from Pionk and Namestnikov at 16:46 of the 3rd.

Coach McLellan called timeout

Winnipeg battled the Larkin line and Seider and Chiarot after the goal against, and Detroit was called for an icing with 2:37 left, infuriating the Red Wings–and Mickey Redmond…

The Jets called timeout and pulled Hellebuyck for a 6-on-5 with 2:37 remaining.

On the odd-man disadvantage, Detroit’s Chiarot, Seider, Raymond, Veleno and Larkin forced the Jets offside, triggering a TV timeout with 2:26 remaining…

Detroit drew in for the blueline draw and Winnipeg won it, Morrissey ripped the puck around the back boards, Scheifele and Vilardi cycled, but Larkin and Raymond cleared the puck, the Wings regrouped, and the Jets pushed offensively…

Seider made a good block of a pass and a clear that was an icing with 1:37 remaining…

Larkin drew in for the faceoff and tied it up, was hacked and whacked by Lowry, Scheifele battled Seider, Larkin tangled and was tripped by Vilardi, Morrissey cycled, and Seider cleared the puck again and juuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuust missed the empty net with 1:00 remaining.

Detroit tied up the next draw, Connor centered it but the Wings blocked off the shot, cleared the zone, Winnipeg tagged up, tipped a shot wide, and Raymond cleared it for Larkin who scored the EMPTY NET GOAL to make it 4-2 with 28.4 left in the 3rd.

Dylan Larkin scored the 4-2 goal at 19:31 from Moritz Seider. Detroit would win 4-2.
