I like the Daniel Spring move for Detroit. 1 year, $2 million. Again, I can’t retweet the people who reported it— Sean Shapiro (@seanshapiro) July 1, 2023

Daniel Sprong was incredibly effective and efficient in very low minutes. Really nice bet by Detroit at a very low cost. The guy can score. pic.twitter.com/jrzMJdwLvI— dom 📈 (@domluszczyszyn) July 1, 2023

There’s some scoring — Sprong had 21 goals last season for Seattle in 66 games. 26 year old, right hand shot has only hit the 20 mark once, but has scored at a 20-goal rate (extrapolated to 82 games) for his career. https://t.co/HfXjshHyCF— Max Bultman (@m_bultman) July 1, 2023

Here’s the Free Press’s Helene St. James on Sprong

The Detroit Red Wings added a 20-goal scorer to their roster on the opening day of free agency.

Daniel Sprong, a right-shot forward from the Netherlands, was signed to a one-year deal worth $2 million. It was the fourth signing Saturday for general manager Steve Yzerman, who also mined the market for goaltenders James Reimer and Alex Lyon and defenseman Justin Holl.

At 26, Sprong fits into the core group that Yzerman is building around, though the short team deal indicates this is an audition to see if Sprong can make the Wings better.

Sprong (6 feet, 202 pounds) is coming off a career-best 21 goals and 25 assists in 66 games with the Seattle Kraken. He scored 13 goals in 2020-21 with the Washington Capitals and 14 in 2018-19 with the Pittsburgh Penguins, but otherwise has been in single digits.

And here’s MLive’s Ansar Khan on Sprong:

The Detroit Red Wings signed right wing Daniel Sprong to a one-year, $2 million contract Saturday during the first day of free agency.

Sprong, 26, tallied a career-high 21 goals and 46 points in 66 games last season for the Seattle Kraken. He had just one goal and one assist in the playoffs, however.

A right-shooter, Sprong (6-0, 202) has appeared in 268 games with four teams (Pittsburgh, Anaheim, Washington and Seattle), picking up 67 goals and 116 points.

He was drafted in the second round by the Penguins in 2015 (46th overall).

Here’s the Red Wings’ press release:

The 6-foot, 202-pound forward also helped the Kraken reach the Stanley Cup playoffs for the first time in franchise history, recording two points (1-1-2) in 10 postseason contests. Sprong split the 2021-22 season between the Washington Capitals and Kraken, notching 14 points (8-6-14), a plus-six rating and eight penalty minutes in 47 games with the Capitals before netting six goals in 16 appearances with the Kraken. Originally selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round (46th overall) of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, Sprong has accumulated 116 points (67-49-116) and 44 penalty minutes in 268 games with the Penguins, Anaheim Ducks, Capitals and Kraken since debuting as an 18-year-old in 2015-16. He also compiled 98 points (44-54-98) and 54 penalty minutes in 109 American Hockey League games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, San Diego Gulls and Hershey Bears. Sprong competed in the 2018 AHL All-Star Classic and was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team after leading all freshmen with 32 goals during the 2017-18 season.

A native of Amsterdam, Netherlands, Sprong played four seasons with the Charlottetown Islanders of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League from 2013-17. He was named to the QMJHL All-Rookie Team in 2013-14 after registering 68 points (30-38-68) and 20 penalty minutes in 67 regular-season games, along with five points (4-1-5) in four playoff appearances. 1. Finally a move I like and its only a 1-year deal. Could be good trade bait at the deadline if we are out of the playoff picture again (which is more than likely with the current roster).
