Reminder: Red Wings to hold blood drive on August 13th

The Oakland Press’s Andrea Peck offers a timely reminder regarding the Red Wings and American Red Cross’s blood drive to be held at Little Caesars Arena on Tuesday, August 13th:

The American Red Cross and Meijer will partner for a blood drive to help address the emergency blood shortage.

The drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13 in the Via Concourse at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

According to Red Cross officials, the organization has less than a three-day supply of most blood types and less than a two-day supply of type O blood.

Everyone who comes to donate will receive a pair of complimentary tickets to a Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons preseason game, as well as other prize giveaways. This is the second year Little Caesars Arena hosted the blood drive in the Via Concourse.

People who wish to donate blood can download the American Red Cross Blood Donor app, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS, sponsor code: LCA313, to make an appointment or for more information. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years old in most states, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood.

Khan profiles Danny DeKeyser

MLive’s Ansar Khan reviews Danny DeKeyser’s 2018-2019 season and issues a 2019-2020 season outlook for the big shut-down defenseman:

2019-20 outlook: DeKeyser showed improvement during an injury-plagued season that cost him 30 games.

His skating and mobility enabled him to move the puck out of his zone more efficiently and quicker than he had the previous three years. Added strength allowed him to win more puck battles.

Overall, it was his best season since 2014-15, but he still wasn’t as strong as he was his first two full NHL seasons.

DeKeyser and Nick Jensen formed a solid pairing before Jensen was dealt to Washington just before the trade deadline.

DeKeyser figures to be paired with either Mike Green or Filip Hronek, while the other is partnered with Patrik Nemeth. They should comprise the team’s top four on defense.

Zadina, Veleno make Sporting News’ Top 50 prospects list

The Sporting News’s Steve Kournianos filed an assessment of the top 50 drafted prospects in the NHL, and he mentions two Red Wings players on his list:

4. Filip Zadina, LW, Detroit Red Wings

2018 draft: First round, sixth overall

You know you’re an elite prospect when you’re considered a draft-day steal at sixth overall, but such was the case in 2018 when this 200-foot sniper fell into Detroit’s lap. Sure, his nondescript AHL numbers (35 points in 59 games) and lackluster performance at the 2019 IIHF World Junior Championship left critics wanting more; however, his puck skills, work ethic and dynamism give the Red Wings a good reason to think he’ll contend for the vacated top-six slot on the wing left by Gustav Nyqvist’s departure.

17. Joe Veleno, C, Detroit Red Wings

2018 draft: First round, 30th overall

This lightning-quick playmaker spoon-fed his detractors a steady diet of humble pie during a season in which he torched the QMJHL for a league-best 1.76 points-per-game average to become the likely candidate to center Canada’s top line at the 2020 WJC. But Veleno is more than just a set-up man with speed; his work ethic on and off the ice has helped him become one of the NHL’s best two-way forward prospects. He’ll probably start the season in the AHL, but it shouldn’t take long for him to become an impact player for the Red Wings.

Monroe: Toledo Walleye anticipate icing an elite roster this season

The Toledo Walleye’s 2019-2020 season roster will remain in flux until later this fall, when the Red Wings and Grand Rapids Griffins’ respective rosters are determined, but the Walleye have built the foundation for their ’19-20 team, re-signing a handful of veterans and inking several free agents over the course of this summer.

The Toledo Blade’s Mark Monroe spoke with Walleye coach Dan Watson regarding the shape of the Walleye’s roster thus far, with Watson suggesting that the Walleye will continue to build an elite team as the summer comes to a close:

“Toledo is the prime place in the ECHL to play,” Watson said. “This is the most phone calls I’ve fielded from agents and players. I’ve had some high-profile players calling me.”

Significant roster turnover is a major part of the game at the ECHL level. A whole host of high profile and productive players will not return to the team, including forwards Dylan Sadowy, Zach Gallant, and Bryan Moore, along with defensemen Matt Register, Kevin Tansey, and Ryan Obuchowski.

“There are a lot of guys moving on,” Watson said. “That’s just the nature of the beast.”

However, Watson also said he anticipates signing several other players who are still awaiting offers from American Hockey League teams. Last season’s team that fell in six games to Newfoundland in the Kelly Cup Finals was filled with players on the fringe between the higher level American Hockey League and ECHL. Many players received call ups to the AHL during the season and the Walleye organization always abides by a policy of allowing players to move up during the season.

“Those are the kinds of players we want,” Watson said. “They make our practices more competitive.”

Glendening’s ‘numbers’ reveal solid grit-and-grind statistics

DetroitRedWings.com’s Arthur J. Regner examines Luke Glendening’s 2018-2019 season “By the Numbers” this morning, and Glendening hit some significant targets as a physical, grinding forward this past season:

102 – Always willing to put his body on the line, Glendening’s 102 blocked shots was tops on the Red Wings. Defenseman Niklas Kronwall was second on the Wings with 96 blocked shots, followed by fellow blueliner DeKeyser with 94.

198 – A player who enjoys the physicality of the game, his 198 hits led the Wings. Justin Abdelkader‘s 185 ranked second and Jonathan Ericsson‘s 98 hits ranked third on the team.

55.7% – Glendening’s face-off winning percentage of 55.7 percent led the Red Wings and ranked 13th overall in the NHL.

Khan profiles Andreas Athanasiou

MLive’s Ansar Khan is posting a set of Red Wings player profiles as training camp approaches, and Khan kicks off his the series by discussing Andreas Athanasiou’s 2018-19 season accomplishments, as well as his 2019-2020 season outlook:

2019-20 outlook: Athanasiou experienced a breakout season after two years of inconsistent play that occasionally drew criticism from coach Jeff Blashill for lack of engagement. Blashill praised him in training camp and continued to laud his competitive level throughout the season.

Athanasiou made a seamless transition to center following the trade deadline and performed well there the final 19 games. He was destined to be the second-line center until Valtteri Filppula was signed on July 1. Now the plan is for Athanasiou to return to the wing, perhaps on a line with Filppula or Frans Nielsen at center and Taro Hirose at the other wing.

Athanasiou’s elite speed and finishing ability should make him a consistent candidate to score 30 goals. Playing the wing will reduce some of his defensive responsibilities, but it’s an area of his game Blashill will continue to stress, regardless if he’s at center or wing.

It’s a contract year for Athanasiou, who could cash in with a long-term deal worth more than $5 million per season with another strong showing.
