Well, this changes things…
Pertaining to @JoeSmithTB report of Steve Yzerman stepping down as GM in Tampa Bay, source tells Free Press Yzerman told Lightning players he was going home to Detroit. Has maintained area home while GM of Tampa Bay Lightning.

But does “going home” mean to spend time with his family, or something else?
Update: FYI:
Yzerman told #TBLightning players he was heading back to Detroit but it was unclear if that meant to live (he has a family and home there) or to eventually work.

Once again, let’s pray its not for health issues for him or someone in his family, but coming home to be the Wings New GM!
Agreed, hopefully it’s nothing health related or a personal matter driving this decision. Very curious to find out the motivation behind this decision.
Rather unexpected… as with the others, I hope my thoughts of a personal tragedy are unfounded.
As always, ‘Best of luck to you and yours, Mr. Yzerman.’
Besides a health issue, the only thing I can think of is the negotiations for a contract extension didn’t go well between TB and Stevie or those negotiations were interrupted by a future offer. Let’s hope its the latter.
Bombshell is no exaggeration among this fanbase.
Will echo the above – really hope this has nothing to do with anyone’s health, etc.
