Come for the news, stay for the snark (Red Wings to play in the ‘Discover [card] Central Division’)

Red Wings to play in a division where that one store you shop at doesn’t take your credit card. https://t.co/9a8wE2xQQh— George Malik (@georgemalik) January 5, 2021

On the one hand, desperate financial times call for desperate financial measures like selling title sponsorship to your divisions. On the other hand, I’m now at 90% that we’re a few months away from the New Amsterdam Vodka Hart Trophy. pic.twitter.com/uBtfrOXF5r— Greg Wyshynski (@wyshynski) January 5, 2021

I also don’t envy play by play announcers this season:

“The Penguins are now just two points out of first place in the MassMutual NHL East Division, presented by MassMutual!”— Greg Wyshynski (@wyshynski) January 5, 2021

“Discover NHL Central Division” is also the title of the DVD that Central Division teams use for free-agent recruitment.— Greg Wyshynski (@wyshynski) January 5, 2021

My name is George Malik, and I'm the Malik Report's editor/blogger/poster. I have been blogging about the Red Wings since 2006, when MLive hired me to work their SlapShots blog, and I joined Kukla's Korner in 2011 as The Malik Report. I'm starting The Malik Report as a stand-alone site, hoping that having my readers fund the website is indeed the way to go to build a better community and create better content.

  1. I have a feeling covid will be used as an excuse to plaster ads everywhere in the future. The helmet ads was just a start, I bet jersey ads will be next. I understand its a business, but there is a difference between running a business to make a profit and running a business to maximize profit at any cost. I’ve felt this ever since the Wings moved to LCA. Chris makes 100% of the profits at the new arena (had to share them with city at the Joe), has control of all the parking and yet LCA is plastered with ads everywhere, including naming of entrances (no more Howe entrance, instead its the Meijer entrance). It just feels like overkill.
