Two roster notes from the AP’s recap: on Larkin and the Covid Quintet

Of Red Wings roster-related note from the Associated Press’s Larry Lage’s game recap:

SCORING PUNCH

[Dylan] Larkin’s goal gave him six points in seven games. He has provided desperately needed scoring for an offensively challenged team that was without Bertuzzi, who leads the team with five goals.

Larkin, the team’s captain, has been playing through an undisclosed injury since he was hurt last week against Dallas.

”I feel like I can still help us win, so I’m going to be out there,” he said. ”If that changes, I’ll have to make a decision.”

And…

PANDEMIC PLAY

The Red Wings were without Adam Erne, Robby Fabbri, Sam Gagner, Jon Merrill and Filip Zadina due to the NHL’s COVID-19 protocols, while Florida didn’t have anyone on the league’s list.

”I don’t know the exact dates, but we should have most of them available for Wednesday,” Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said.

Update: Here’s a bit more on the COVID quintet from the Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan:

The Wings will be getting some of their players on the COVID-19 protocol list gradually this week.

Robby Fabbri and Adam Erne could be back as soon as Wednesday in Tampa, while Sam Gagner, Jon Merrill and Filip Zadina are likely to filter in during the early part of the road trip.

Red Wings-Panthers Game 2 quick take: Wings can’t rally but work damn hard in 2nd straight loss to Florida

The Detroit Red Wings attempted to snap an 0-4-and-2 streak opposite a Florida Panthers team that’s won 7 straight games in Detroit.

Florida made it 8 straight in Detroit and 9-0-and-1 over their last 10 vs. the Wings–with 4 more meetings between these teams on tap in February–via a 3-2 victory over a Red Wings team that was damn determined to rally from a 3-1 deficit. Detroit opened the scoring, gave up 3 straight goals (2 on the power play), and Detroit ulttimately was unable to rally completely.

The Wings got gutsy performances from an injured Larkin, a healthy Mantha, a big and ornery Givani Smith and Michael Rasmussen, Troy Stecher was excellent, Thomas Greiss was competent and strong in goal, and Detroit at least pissed off and distracted the Panthers at times due to their willingness to play a little dirty and work their tails off.

None of that resulted in a much-needed win for the 0-5-and-1-of-late Wings, but there was a sense of hope throughout this game that has been missing for half a month now. That counts for something in the “growth and learning” department.

FSD’s Trevor Thompson’s update on Moritz Seider is not good

At the start of the 3rd period of the Wings-Panthers game, Fox Sports Detroit’s Trevor Thompson offered a North American, English-language update on Moritz Seider, who suffered a shoulder injury playing with Rogle BK last Thursday.

According to Thompson, the Red Wings believe that Seider will be out for “quite some time” due to his issue, which, again, is presumed to be a shoulder injury.

Rogle BK’s website reported that Seider’s injury was of the soft tissue variety, and that’s hard to narrow down.

Prospect Round-up: Berggren, Wallinder, Niederbach score in Sweden

In the SHL, Jonatan Berggren scored a goal on 3 shots, finishing at +1 in 16:16 played as Skelleftea AIK won 4-1 over Lulea Hockey:

Malte Setkov had an assist, finishing at -1 in 23:43 played as AIK Stockholm won 3-2 over Vasteras IK. Gustav Berglund finished even in 15:29 played for Vasteras;

And in the ICE Hockey League, Jesper Eliasson served as the back-up in Red Bulls Salzburg’s 4-2 win over the Vienna Capitals.

Sometimes you have to know when you’re trying to eat an elephant

HockeySverige.se’s Ronnie Ronnqvist posted a massive, several-chapters-long interview with former Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg this morning.

Normally, I’d try to translate it, even though it’s a good 10 pages long, but I’m a French fried potato this morning, trying to cover the Wings and Griffins this morning, and I’m facing walls of fatigue and anxiety this morning (I may very well take Monday off as the Wings aren’t going to practice tomorrow), so:

For the moment, I’m going to encourage you to head over to Google Translate and read the interview or chunks thereof at your leisure. The truth of the matter is that this is several interviews stitched into one “Old School Hockey” article, and there’s some new stuff, some old stuff, and a mix of the two in the interview, and not all of it might be very interesting to you as a Red Wings fan because Ronnqvist asks Zetterberg to share stories about people involved in his development as a hockey player.

I’ll try to tackle chunks of the article over the next couple of days, but I’m not in any shape to translate ten pages of Swedish right now, and there’s nothing earth-shattering about the interview or its content, so I’m going to leave reading it up to you for now. Sometimes you have to know when your body and brain are about to break down, and that’s where I’m at this morning.

We can only eat the elephant one bite at a time.
