Duff: Who’s on the PK?

Detroit Hockey Now’s Bob Duff penned an article discussing the potential fits for the Red Wings’ penalty-kill on a Luke Glendening-less team:

Looking at the big picture, the penalty-killing performance of the Detroit Red Wings doesn’t paint a pretty picture. They finished 27th in the NHL, successfully killing off infractions at a pedestrian 78.7% rate. Detroit allowed 33 power-play goals, the 13th-most in the league.

However, from March 27th onward, a different penalty-killing unit emerged from the shadows of what had been a dismal year and began to display an ability to hold their own, not to mention hold opposition power plays off the scoresheet.

From that point onward, Detroit’s didn’t allow a power-play goal in 17 of the last 21 games of the 2020-21 season. The Wings killed off 52 of 57 shorthanded situations (91.2%). Considering that the Vegas Golden Knights (86.8%) led the league, it would certainly appear that the Wings found a working formula while down a man. In fact, they closed out the season successfully killing off 16 straight penalties.

There is, however, a caveat to all the good news. Two of Detroit’s top three penalty-killing forwards in terms of ice time, Darren Helm and Luke Glendening, no longer wear the winged wheel. Both departed in the summer via free agency.

Sears’ notebook: Filip Zadina looking to crank it up offensively

DetroitRedWings.com’s Ethan Sears presents a Sunday notebook in which he discusses Red Wings forward Filip Zadina’s desire to grab and hold onto an offensive foothold in the NHL:

“Ultimately as a player, the best players find ways to create space and some guys do it being super fast and some guys do it being big,” [Red Wings coach Jeff] Blashill said. “He’s gotta use his brain for sure. He’s gotta give and go, he’s gotta find the open areas at a critical moment where he can get a puck back.

“I think learning to get the puck out quicker and learning to be accurate with the shot is important. I think when you’re younger, you work on shooting it as hard as you can. But that’s not really the point. The point is to find those little openings not to miss the net and to score. So again, I think he worked hard at it.”

With Jakub Vrana missing the first few days of training camp, Zadina has been skating on a line with Dylan Larkin and Tyler Bertuzzi, an opportunity he hopes carries into the preseason.

“I’m doing the best I can to stick with them as well. It depends how I play hockey with them,” Zadina said. “We might be playing together at the start of the season. It’s still too far ahead to tell if I’ll be playing with them.”

Like the team as a whole, Zadina’s outlook for the season is simple: improve as much as possible.

“Just hold onto the puck, play with the puck, go more to the net,” Zadina said. “Just force myself a little bit more to shoot the puck and just believe.”

Duff: Is Joe Veleno a better fit at wing?

Detroit Hockey Now’s Bob Duff ponders whether Joe Veleno is a better fit at wing than center on this year’s Red Wings roster:

It’s not fourth line center or bust for Joe Veleno to make the Detroit Red Wings’ roster.

“There is a world where he is competing on the wing for sure,” Detroit Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said.  “There is no doubt.”

Veleno probably helped his roster chances by coming to training camp bigger and stronger than he was last season. He seems more confident.

“Obviously there are unforeseen things like injuries,” Blashill said. “Let’s see where it goes. The biggest thing is he has to make a statement every time he’s on the ice that he’s going to make us better.”

Detroit general manager Steve Yzerman has made it clear that even prize rookies must earn their place. The Red Wings won’t hand a roster spot to a rookie and see what happens.

“It’s not about making our team,” Blashill said. “It’s about making our team better.”

Daily Faceoff’s Red Wings preview preaches a little less doom and gloom

Daily Faceoff’s Cam Lewis posted a review of the Red Wings’ offseason moves:

What to expect in 2021-22?

The Red Wings will be an interesting team this season.

As I mentioned earlier, they took a decent step forward in 2021, which was fairly impressive given the injuries they dealt with. If the likes of Bertuzzi, Larkin, and Fabbri return and have healthy years in 2021-22, the Wings will be poised for another step forward.

Another key to Detroit’s ascent is how well their newest crop of rookies perform as they break into the league. Moritz Seider, the No. 6 pick from the 2019 draft, headlines the rookies Detroit will be welcoming to their lineup this season. Other players who could contribute are Joe Veleno, who had a solid five-game cup of coffee with the Wings in 2021, and Jonatan Berggren, who just had a breakout season in the Swedish Hockey League.

Playoffs are obviously a stretch for this group, but another step forward from 2021 is the expectation.

HSJ in the morning: A profile of Moritz Seider

The Free Press’s Helene St. James posted a subscriber-only article regarding one Moritz Seider this morning, discussing the Red Wings rookie’s progression as witnessed by Wings player development specialist Niklas Kronwall, Wings coach Jeff Blashill and teammate Sam Gagner:

“He’s got a lot of good natural attributes that you’d like in an NHL defenseman,” Kronwall told the Free Press on Saturday. “That goes along with his personality — he’s very driven, he wants to improve. There’s a lot to like about Mo.”

Since retiring in 2019 having won a Stanley Cup and having played all of his 953 NHL games with the Wings, Kronwall has worked as the team’s director of European Player Development. Kronwall, a first-round pick in 2000, has been on the ice through the first three days of training camp with Seider, working on his shot.

“It’s rare to a have a guy who can both play with the puck and play with a natural feistiness that he has,” Kronwall. said. “He had a really, really good year in Sweden. I am very anxious to watch him in games here and see what he can do.”

Seider has been paired in practices at Centre Ice with newcomer Nick Leddy, a veteran defenseman acquired in the offseason. Coach Jeff Blashill described it as “a starting point:”

“You’ve got a really good skater in Leddy; you’ve got a really big guy in Moritz. Both have the opportunity to jump up in the play. I think having that veteran presence, we felt like it could be a really good match and they could see some significant minutes together.”

Impressions from the third day of Red Wings training camp 2021

The Detroit Red Wings concluded the formal portion of their training camp activities on Saturday, emphasizing special teams work as the first and second days‘ worth of drills gave way to a day exclusively spent working upon odd-man situations, both under coach Jeff Blashill and under the tutelage of defensive coach Doug Houda and new offense/power play coach Alex Tanguay (who’s very vocal).

Today, Jakub Vrana also joined the fray for a shot period of time (and injured his shoulder; he’ll be reevaluated tomorrow), but most of the Red Wings’ activities involved changing up their PP and PK units significantly, though there were some consistencies in terms of Max Bultman’s lines from Day 1. It looks like we’ll see those lines tomorrow.

Heading into the Red vs. White game at 12 PM EDT on Sunday (most likely on DetroitRedWings.com and/or their YouTube channel), the pace of today’s activities was good, and the coaches were instructive in hammering home the basics of special teams play and competitiveness in said play…

But it’s very evident that the players want to move on to a real scrimmage and the practices which precede Detroit’s very heavy 8-games-in-12-nights exhibition schedule.

The Bobby Ryan Fan Club

In an article written regarding Jakub Vrana’s shoulder injury, the Free Press’s Helene St. James noted that the Red Wings’ players are rooting for a current and potentially former compatriot in try-out Bobby Ryan:

If the Wings have juggle lines without Vrana, it could present an opportunity for Bobby Ryan. He’s at camp on a tryout, and he showed at the start of last season how well he jelled with Fabbri and Filip Zadina.

“He did a great job last year and he’s rehabbed from his injury and he looks great,” Fabbri said. “He’s a great guy to have around the room and be with the guys. Everyone is happy to have him back. If you look throughout his career, he’s been a very productive player, and a lot of that goes to his smarts and putting himself in the right spot. he’s got a quick releae and a great spot. He’s been looking good so far.”
