Expressen’s Gunnar Nordstrom has the scoop this morning on Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson, whose North American agent, J.P. Barry, is negotiating a contract with Detroit interim GM Shawn Horcoff:
Negotiations underway for the Swedish defensive star
LOS ANGELES. The situation has brightened for Simon Edvinsson, 23, with the Detroit Red Wings.
Negotiations for a new multi-year contract are underway since the NHL club named Shawn Horcoff as interim general manager on Tuesday.
“We were talking to him today. He now has authority to negotiate on behalf of the team,” CAA agent J.P. Barry said to Expressen.
Edvinsson played out his rookie contract last spring, but negotiations to continue playing for the Red Wings were stranded in July after hockey GM Steve Yzerman was suddenly fired. Or stepped down on its own…There are divided opinions about what really happened there.
Simon Edvinsson is a key player in Detroit, and forms the team’s first defensive pair with the Moritz Seider.
The Swede’s value has increased significantly over the past year, and he is expected to get a substantial pay rise now.
Agents told Expressen with guesses that Edvinsson could get $7-9 million in this year’s salary. This corresponds to 68-88 million Swedish Krona, depending on how long the contract is agreed.
Simon Edvinsson traveled over to the United States and Detroit this weekend, and confirmed to Expressen the other day that he was in place in Hockeytown.
The training camp for the 2026-27 season kicks off on Thursday.
“We’ve got two weeks before the season starts, so hopefully we can find a deal before then,” said J.P. Barry.
Edvinsson earned last season $900 000 (about 8.7 million Swedish Krona).
Red Wings owner Chris Ilitch announced yesterday that the hunt for a new general manager is continuing, and that it has a large number of candidates have shown interest in the job.
Horcoff, who had the post of assistant GM since 2022, is one of the candidates, according to Ilitch. Steve Yzerman is now transitioning to a role as an advisor to the team’s management.
