Of Red Wings managerial-related note this afternoon:

The Red Wings appear inclined toward implementing a different front office structure and strategy after missing the playoffs the past 10 years. They might hire a director of hockey operations who oversees, among others, a general manager who handles the day-to-day tasks. The Tigers, the Ilitches’ other team, have a similar format with Scott Harris serving as president of baseball operations and Jeff Greenberg as GM, though Harris does trades and signings.
This much is certain: The new leadership will be data and analytics driven.
The Red Wings, in their July 15 press release announcing a change in hockey operations leadership, said Yzerman will continue serving the organization as a senior advisor. He is not involved in the search process, however, while being paid the final three years and $15 million of his contract.
[Sportsnet’s Elliotte] Friedman mentioned Greenberg as a candidate. Greenberg has mostly a baseball background, having worked for the Pirates, Diamondbacks and Cubs before the Tigers hired him in 2023. But he also served as the Chicago Blackhawks associate GM for one season before coming to Detroit.
Former Red Wings assistant GM Ryan Martin is among many who have expressed interest in the job. He’s spent the past five seasons with the New York Rangers, getting elevated from assistant to associate GM a year ago, and runs their AHL club, Hartford. Martin was the Red Wings’ “capologist” for 16 years and ran the Grand Rapids Griffins for eight seasons.
Shawn Horcoff, the Griffins GM since February 2022, is handling the Red Wings’ day to day operations until Yzerman’s successor is hired but is not authorized to make major decisions.
Ilitch, in the release, indicated internal candidates would be considered. Horcoff and Kris Draper were the assistant GMs under Yzerman.

The Detroit Red Wings still don’t have a GM.
What we do know is that right now Shawn Horcoff is handling the day-to-day of the Red Wings, but isn’t allowed to make trades. As one scout joked with me, his job is probably just a daily check-in with Simon Edvinsson’s agent.
The Red Wings have hired an outside firm to run the search, the chatter amongst those in Edmonton was that Detroit is using the same firm that Toronto used when it hired John Chayka.
I have not been able to confirm that, but it tracks with what I’ve heard about Detroit looking at an analytic-based GM potentially, and why the Red Wings may hire Tigers general manager Jeff Greenberg.
