Detroit Hockey Now’s Kevin Allen scouts managerial candidate Jeff Greenberg of the Detroit Tigers, who Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported is in the mix to succeed former GM Steve Yzerman:
The Detroit Tigers have a two-person system with President of Baseball Operations Scott Harris over general manager Jeff Greenberg. Harris is the decision maker in this set-up.
Friedman confirmed what Detroit Hockey Now writers have been hearing that Greenberg is a possible candidate for a role with the Tigers. Friedman said he isn’t reporting that [Greenberg] is the favorite.
The question is whether Greenberg is interested because he could have a greater say with the Red Wings?
Most of Greenberg’s career has been spent in baseball. He has a law degree from Columbia. His resume shows internships with the Pittsburgh Pirates, MLB Executive Offices, Arizona Diamondbacks and Chicago Cubs. He moved up to become a director of baseball operations in 2018 and director of professional scouting in 2019. In 2020, he was promoted to Cubs assistant general manager.
The Chicago Blackhawks hired him in 2023 to become their associate general manager. Harris hired him away from the Blackhawks a year later for the Tigers job.
Greenberg grew up involved in hockey and was captain of the University of Pennsylvania club hockey team that plays in the ACHA.
Continued; sounds like he’s a solid candidate, but I hope that the Red Wings explore many candidates before deciding upon their next GM and/or president of hockey operations, including people who aren’t tied to the organization.
