NHL clubs had until 5 p.m. ET on Monday to submit qualifying offers to their pending restricted free agents, and the Detroit Red Wings have made their decisions.
Defenseman Simon Edvinsson and 2019 seventh-round (191st overall) pick Carter Gylander were the only players to receive qualifying offers from the Red Wings. At the same time, 2021 third-round (70th overall) pick Carter Mazur was among the many players who were not offered one.
By extending qualifying offers, the Red Wings preserve their matching rights if either player signs an offer sheet with another club once free agency begins at 12:00 p.m. ET on July 1. Both players also have the option of accepting their qualifying offer or continuing negotiations on a new contract with Detroit.

It’s possible that the Red Wings are finalizing a deal with Mazur, but it’s also true the team has concerns about Mazur’s ability to stay healthy. He is no longer waiver exempt and would have to go through waivers next season to be sent to Grand Rapids.
Over the past two seasons, injuries have limited Muskegon Mazur to 45 games total between the Red Wings and Griffins. He has played nine games with Detroit and hasn’t registered a point. Mazur showed 11 goals and five assists for 16 points in 16 games for Grand Rapids.
Mazur, who has built himself up to 197 pounds, plays a physical style that seems perfect for a team that wants to be harder to play against.
The Red Wings traded Mazur’s roommate, Amadeus Lombardi, Mazur’s roommate to the New Jersey Devils earlier in the week. He also is no longer waiver exempt and had trouble staying healthy.

Forward Carter Mazur was among five players the Detroit Red Wings did not extend a qualifying offer to by Monday’s 5 p.m. deadline, according to puckpedia.com, making him an unrestricted free agent Wednesday at noon.
The Red Wings could still sign Mazur, a Jackson native drafted in the third round in 2021 (70th overall), but he will be free to explore other options.
Mazur’s pro career has been marked by several injuries. He missed most of this past season with the Grand Rapids Griffins but was productive when in the lineup, collecting 11 goals and 16 points in 16 regular season games and five goals and six goals in eight playoff games. He had no points in eight games with the Red Wings toward the end of the season.
Mazur won a national championship with Denver in 2022. He made his NHL debut with the Red Wings on March 6, 2025, but suffered a season-ending elbow injury during his second shift.
Would we think that a contract offer for Mazur is imminent? This one is very confusing.
Yes, I think that the Wings will still sign Mazur to a contract of some kind. Detroit’s not qualified “roster-worthy” players in the past, and they’ve always come to terms with those players.
