Red Wings-Penguins morning skate Tweets and articles: Pens skate early, may not have Kasperi Kapanen in the lineup; Wings ice a balanced squad for their later-morning skate

Updated 6x at 12:35 PM: The Detroit Red Wings begin their slate of 8 exhibition games to be played over the course of 12 nights with a game in Pittsburgh against a stacked Penguins team tonight (7 PM EDT start on DetroitRedWings.com, PittsburghPenguins.com, and 97.1 FM), and the odds are not stacked in Detroit’s favor heading into this game.

The Penguins hit the ice at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh around 10:30 AM…

Meanwhile, DetroitRedWings.com’s Jonathan Mills posted a game preview:

Detroit will take the ice under first-year head coach Derek Lalonde, who spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach with the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he helped guide the club to four straight postseason berths and three consecutive Stanley Cup Final appearances. Lalonde said he wants his players to focus on the process throughout exhibition play.

“Keep building on our process with implementing new neutral zone, new D-zone coverage and take a step every day,” Lalonde said Monday after the Detroit’s final training camp practice. “Hopefully with our structure, some of it’s new for the guys, but certainly establishing some compete, attitude and work on all of those things.”

Detroit will play eight preseason games, featuring two games each against the Penguins, Chicago Blackhawks, Toronto Maple Leafs and Washington Capitals.

“This is the first time in my NHL career I’ll be happy to have eight games,” Lalonde said about the preseason. “To me, six is good and seven is maybe a little too much. But for us this year, it’s going to be beneficial.”

The Red Wings didn’t take to the ice at Little Caesars Arena until 11:18 AM:

Looks like the radio information we received was incorrect:

Hey fans here is tonight’s roster for the game in Pittsburgh.
Just a reminder that tomorrow’s game vs Chicago will be aired @wwj starting at 7:15pm #gowings https://t.co/dFOH1wVZyo— Ken Kal (@KenKalDRW) September 27, 2022

Update #4:

Tristan Jarry will start and play the first half of tonight’s preseason game.

Casey DeSmith will play the second half.— Danny Shirey (@DannyShireyPGH) September 27, 2022

Kasperi Kapanen was supposed to play tonight, but is not feeling well and won’t play, per Mike Sullivan.

Jeff Carter is day-to-day with an upper-body injury.— Danny Shirey (@DannyShireyPGH) September 27, 2022

Update #5:

Lalonde said Soderblom will play tonight in place of Vrana, who was feeling ill. Brattstron will start and Cossa enter halfway through. Penguins have strong lineup with Crosby, Malkin playing. https://t.co/yaexput9Zo— Ansar Khan (@AnsarKhanMLive) September 27, 2022

Update #6:

Söderblom is indeed playing tonight for Detroit. Sounds like originally Vrana was going to be in, but he woke up not feeling great and DET wants to be cautious. So Söderblom wasn’t skating this morning just because he was a late add to the lineup.— Max Bultman (@m_bultman) September 27, 2022
