Red Wings-Coyotes quick take: sucker punch

The Detroit Red Wings attempted to snap a 3-game losing streak as they faced the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night.

Detroit got f***ed over by the refs en route to a 2-1 Arizona Coyotes overtime win, but the Red Wings would not have been in the situation to get f***ed in the butt if they had displayed a killer instinct.

That’s my take on the game. Plain and simple, if the Red Wings didn’t take the pedal off the gas in the 3rd period, in which they were out-shot 12-10, the Red Wings would not have surrendered the 1-1 goal off a lazy icing by Michael Rasmussen, and they wouldn’t have surrendered the 2-1 OT goal in which Chychrun hacked the puck out of Nedeljkovic’s glove and Kessel pitchforked Nedeljkovic out of his crease.

The teams dressed the following lineups…

The starters and scratches were as follows…

In the 1st period…

The Red Wings started the Namestnikov-Rasmussen-Erne line opposite Eriksson-Beagle-Roussel, with Leddy and Hronek on defense.

Alex Nedeljkovic opposed Scott Wedgewood in the goal crease.

The puck hit the ice between Rasmussen and Beagle at 8:14 PM EST, and Beagle tied up the draw, so Arizona was able to chip and chase, Detroit took over and Hronek fed Rasmussen, his pass slid behind big #27, and Roussel sent the first shot in on Nedeljkovic at 13 seconds of the 1st period.

Detroit drew in for a deep defensive zone draw opposite a new Coyotes line, and the Wings iced the puck 19 seconds into the 1st.

Rasmussen drew in for his third faceoff of the night, lost it, and Galchenyuk sent a shot in on Nedeljkovic that was stopped. Detroit raced up the other way, and Nedeljkovic, Erne and Rasmussen stood around and let Arizona break free with the puck, but Detroit’s defense took over and took possession of the puck a minute and five seconds into the 1st;

Boyd bumped Larkin, and Arizona fired another shot in on Nedeljkovic, but Chychrun’s shot was blocked, and Detroit backed in defensively, affording Chychrun another shot in on goal before Detroit was able to break out of its own defensive zone.

The Larkin line barely got a touch of the puck before it was summoned to the bench, and DeKeyser was unable to stop O’Brien, so Fasching chipped the puck deeper, O’Brien ran the boards, and Suter, Zadina and Fabbri took over, Nedeljkovic moved the puck to the half boards, and Zadina fed Oesterle, but Nedeljkovic made another play of the puck, and Detroit flipped the puck in and changed.

Arizona chipped and chased, Detroit regrouped as Veleno cleared the zone, and Arizona forced Sam Gagner to take a dumb penalty as Sam Gagner got caught tripping Kyle Capobianco at 3:07 of the 1st.

On the penalty-kill, Namestnikov lost the draw, Arizona set up and Gostisbehere sent a shot in on Nedeljkovic that had to be stopped off a tip in front.

Arizona tied up the next draw, swept the puck around the back boards, and Keller fed Gostisbehere at the point, Chychrun stalled, fed the puck deep, got it back, played catch again and waited for Gostisbehere to slide a puck down low. Arizona could or would not shoot, so Rasmussen was able to clear the zone;

1:05 into the PK, Arizona chipped the puck in deep, and Bertuzzi and Suter forced the Coyotes to turn the puck over, with Suter chipping and Bertuzzi pressuring the Coyotes’ defense.

Arizona’s Wedgewood played the puck up ice, Boyd skated up and into the Wings’ zone, Detroit’s Veleno swiped the puck away and fired a long shot high and wide, and Crouse took over, Capobianco chipped the puck in, and Detroit killed the penalty.

Fabbri, Larkin and Raymond cycled, Arizona took over, and their first line cycled deep into the Wings’ zone, pushed the puck to the point, retrieved a loose puck and chipped a Roussel shot in on Nedeljkovic, which was stopped.

Off the next faceoff, Arizona’s shot was blocked out of play;

The Coyotes won the next draw as well, and O’Brien blocked his defenseman’s shot, but regained control of the puck, and cycled to Fasching. Detroit regained control, Suter fed Bertuzzi and Zadina pushed the puck deeper, but Dzingel chipped the puck out of trouble.

Lindstrom fed Oesterle and Detroit cleared the zone, skated into the offensive zone, and Gagner blasted a heavy shot wide of Wedgewood. Detroit continued to cycle, but surrendered control of the puck to the Yotes, and Givani Smith stood up Keller HARD at the Wings’ line.

Arizona re-grouped in its own zone, and Namestnikov and Rasmussen provided passive pressure as the Coyotes set up.

Rasmussen, Erne and Namestnikov skated up 3 on 2, Erne fired a shot in on Wedgewood, and it was blocked out of play.

At the first TV timeout at 7:41, Arizona led in shots 3-0 and in attempts 9-2.

Detroit won the next draw and Seider and DeKeyser both attempted to set up teammates for shots, but failed, so they regrouped at center ice, set up Larkin at center, and Larkin chipped and chased;

The Coyotes skated the puck up to center and into the Wings’ zone, where Hronek was smeared, and Bertuzzi fed the puck out to the slot, where Loui Eriksson grabbed the puck and fed the puck into Nedeljkovic;

Detroit skated the other way with the puck, and Lucas Raymond swiped a sneaky turnover off Chychrun and his fellow defenseman.

Larkin raced in, skated into the Raymond chip-in, and deked and dangled Wedgewood to score the Red Wings’ 1-0 goal at 8:41.

Dylan Larkin scored the 1-0 goal from Raymond at 8:41 of the 1st period.

Detroit surrendered a scoring chance on the post-goal shift, but Nedeljkovic made the stop on a Lawson Crouse shot, and on the deep defensive zone faceoff, Arizona was unable to keep the puck in, and Gagner fed Veleno for a fine chance that Wedgewood stifled.

Keller, Boyd and Crouse pushed into the Wings’ zone, it was blocked by Seider out to center, and Arizona regrouped in their own zone 10:15 into the 1st;

Arizona rushed through center, chipped the puck in, and Nedeljkovic played it around to Oesterle, who couldn’t clear the first time, but did the second time.

Detroit regrouped at its blueline, Namestnikov sent the puck deep, Wedgewood played the puck around for Gostisbehere, Rasmussen fed Erne off the turnover and Wedgewood made the stop.

Rasmussen bumped Gostisbehere at one end, Beagle hit Oesterle at the other, and Arizona regrouped at center, chipped the puck deep, and Raymond iced it with 8:37 remaining.

Nedeljkovic stopped a shot off the Arizona deep faceoff win, Arizona cycled the puck, but Detroit took over and chipped it out to center, and Raymond was poke checked by Chychrun to stifle a 1 on 1 chance.

Arizona raced out to center, pushed the puck laterally, and Kessel fed Chychrun for a dump and chase.

Hronek battled 2 Coyotes, he could not clear, and Gostisbehere was stopped by Nedeljkovic.

Keller and Crouse cycled for Boyd down low vs. Leddy, Fabbri stole the wrap pass to the Yotes’ defense, and Detroit raced up the other way, but Zadina flubbed a pass, Arizona skated into Detroit’s zone and Nedeljkovic had to stop Boyd in the slot.

At 12:53, Detroit was being out-shot 6-3 and out-attempted 14-6.

Detroit lost the next draw in their defensive zone, and Arizona battled the puck deep, cycled vs. Raymond and DeKeyser, and Rasmussen and Namestnikov teamed up to clear the zone, cycle deep, and push the puck around to the blueline, where Lindstrom could not keep the puck in.

Arizona set up, skated out, and chipped the puck into Detroit’s zone, cycled, and Oesterle fed Veleno in the Wings’ own slot, Detroit chipped and chased, Chychrun managed to clear the puck despite not having a stick, and Nedeljkovic fed Leddy.

Detroit dumped the puck in, Wedgewood cleared it, and Arizona pushed the puck deep into Detroit’s zone, where Hronek and Leddy continued to struggle.

Nedeljkovic made a big stop on Arizona, Larkin broke in and deked, and he was stopped by Wedgewood off the Bertuzzi pass.

Bertuzzi, Larkin and Raymond cycled with Seider, DeKeyser fed the puck in on goal but wide thereof, and Detroit regrouped at center.

Raymond checked on the forecheck, forcing Arizona to move the puck faster than they’d hoped, and they iced the puck as a result with 4:30 remaining in the 1st.

Arizona kept winning faceoffs, so Detroit had to regroup at center, Fabbri, Suter and Zadina fed the point, Oesterle fired a shot on goal, and Detroit surrendered possession, with Nedeljkovic moving the puck to Lindstrom, then Oesterle, who was hit by O’Brien, and Arizona took over.

Oesterle disrupted the Arizona breakout, but the Coyotes ultimately pushed the puck into the Wings’ zone, and Detroit cycled out of trouble, Rasmussen and Namestnikov looked for Hronek at the point, he fed Namestnikov, and he was blocked off.

Erne did feed Namestnikov for a chance that was blocked, Fasching went the other way and Nedeljkovic had to make a big stop on Capobianco.

Hronek and Leddy continued to struggled in their own zone, Eriksson fed Chychrun for a shot that was blocked in the Wings’ slot, and Gagner cleared the zone.

Veleno, Smith and Gagner worked together to push the puck in the offensive zone, and DeKeyser fired a shot wide of the goal;

Veleno, Smith and Gagner cycled, to the point it went, and Seider fed a sneaky shot in on goal, but Wedgewood made the stop.

The final TV timeout of the period hit with 1:51 remaining.

At 18:09 of the 1st, Detroit was being out-shot 8-7 and out-attempted 16-13. Arizona was 9-and-4 in the faceoff circle.

When play resumed, Larkin lost the deep offensive zone draw, but Larkin and DeKeyser took over at center, chipped the puck deep, and Larkin stole the puck, fed it out front, Bertuzzi was blocked off, Larkin fed Seider, and his diagonal pass was blocked by Kessel.

Seider bumped a Coyote as Kessel fired the puck wide of Nedeljkovic, Detroit regrouped and regained possession, and DeKeyser and Seider set up.

Suter skated out through center, fired a shot in on Wedgewood, and Detroit had to re-set at center, Fabbri fed Oesterle, who fired the puck wide of the net, and Detroit ground and ground the puck out in the corner, Oesterle and Lindstrom played catch and Suter fed Zadina down low, who missed his shot and the Coyotes skated out.

Keller and company cycled deep in the Wings’ zone, but they ran out of time as the first period ended with Detroit up 1-0.

In the 2nd period…

The 2nd period began with Rasmussen’s line drawing in for the opening faceoff, and he tied up the draw vs. Jay Beagle, Leddy chipped, Detroit chased and Rasmussen jabbed the puck until his stick was lifted and Arizona was unable to clear the zone…

So Hronek chipped the puck in on Wedgewood, he played it up ice, Gostisbehere fired a shot wide of Nedeljkovic and Arizona mucked and ground pretty heavily.

Hronek came out of the pile with the puck, afforded Detroit a line change, and Leddy and Hronek played catch until Leddy fed Bertuzzi at center, he turned the puck over, and Chychrun slid the puck deep for Crouse, who was stopped by Nedeljkovic.

Keller fed the puck to the slot, it was blocked, Raymond cleared the zone (barely) and Larkin, Bertuzzi and Raymond struggled somewhat until the Arizona Coyotes had an open point, affording Detroit a clear and change.

Capobianco sent the puck deep, it was blocked by Zadina, he chipped and chased, the Yotes took the puck out to center but came into Detroit’s zone offside.

Detroit drew in for a faceoff at their defensive blueline, they lost it, but DeKeyser and Seider cleared and eventually iced the puck at 2:28.

Suter drew in for a defensive zone draw, vs. Galchenyuk, and the Yotes sort of kind of won the draw, but Detroit cleared it down ice;

Arizona pushed the puck out to center ice, chipped the puck in on Nedeljkovic, and Detroit skated out, with Lindstrom forechecking, Fabbri firing a laser pass to Veleno, and Veleno firing the shot wide of Wedgewood.

Smith, Veleno and Gagner could not cycle, so Leddy took over at the Wings’ line;

Smith was hit, Leddy turned the puck over, and Smith made a smart shot block at the blueline;

Arizona continued, Lyubushkin skated up, gave it away, and Erne and Namestnikov skated deep, waited for Rasmussen, and he fired the shot into the goalpost behind Wedgewood.

4:05 into the 2nd, Rasmussen and company drew in for a defensive zone draw, won it and cleared the puck to center, and further, as Rasmussen deked and dangled, but could not beat Wedgewood;

Seider, Erne and Namestnikov diagonally passed the puck deep, worked it back to Seider, and he fired a wide shot that was gloved by Wedgewood.

4:33 into the 2nd period, Detroit drew in for an offensive zone draw, lost it, and Galchenyuk raced up and fired a shot in on Nedeljkovic.

Detroit went the other way, Larkin missed Berutzzi, and checked Kessel skating into the Wings’ zone instead, with Larkin icing the puck as a result.

Detroit won their defensive zone draw, but Chychrun took the puck at center ice and Detroit changed.

Arizona cycled deep, battled Lindstrom and Oesterle, and Chychrun fired a hard shot in on Nedeljkovic.

Arizona and Detroit drew in at the right faceoff circle, Arizona won the draw but their defense did not keep the puck in the offensive zone, so they regrouped, dumped and chased, and DeKeyser battled, Seider fed Suter, who sent a long pass to Fabbri, he missed it, Leddy fed Zadina for a shot that was stopped by Wedgewood, another was blocked, Fabbri and Leddy worked deep and Lyubushkin was checked by Fabbri, Hronek helped, and Leddy regrouped at center, Zadina fed Hronek, to Leddy it went, and Wedgewood made a stop through a screen.

Arizona chipped the puck down ice, Detroit regrouped, Veleno was tripped, so Arizona rushed in 3 on 2, and Detroit cleared the zone.

Gagner, Veleno and Smith were able to change because the Coyotes iced the puck at 7:27, and Detroit regrouped at center, Seider battled Keller back into his own zone, and Seider fed DeKeyser for a pass off Larkin’s foot.

The Coyotes skated into the Wings’ zone, cycled, and Detroit won the battle for possession, but they only got so far.

At their own blueline, Arizona regrouped, skated through the middle, and Gostisbehere fired a shot high and wide of Nedeljkovic.

Detroit battled along the right side boards, Seider fed DeKeyser for a free pass to Larkin, he looked for Raymond, and Detroit struggled as Arizona regrouped and re-set and skated into the Wings’ zone, where Gostisbehere and Beagle cycled.

Chychrun held the line, swept the puck along the line once and twice, skated in, and Detroit struggled to swipe the puck from the Coyotes, with Detroit clearing the zone only barely so.

Arizona set up in the Wings’ zone again, cycled, and sent a shot into the netting, affording the Wings a necessary TV timeout.

When play resumed at 9:26, Arizona won the deep offensive zone draw, cycled again, and Chychrun’s shot was stopped by Nedeljkovic;

Arizona regrouped at center, chipped and chased, Nedeljkovic played the puck to Oesterle, who turned it over, regained possession, and set up.

Lindstrom sent a shot that was tipped through by Erne, Chychrun fed Keller for a shot that Nedeljkovic stopped, Keller cycled, worked with Capobianco, and Leddy and Hronek continued to struggle.

Arizona cycled, cycled, Keller was blocked at the point and Fabbri broke out 1 on 3.

So the Wings chipped and changed.

With 8:35 remaining, Arizona chipped the puck deep, Nedeljkovic and Seider fed DeKeyser for a clear, Raymond, Bertuzzi and Larkin stood up at center, Larkin fed Raymond, he was tripped, Bertuzzi stopped, Eriksson deked back to Gostisbehere, Bertuzzi kicked the puck away from Beagle, and Beagle took a holding penalty at 12:09.

On the power play, Detroit won the initial faceoff, cycled Raymond to Fabbri to Bertuzzi, he got one shot in that was stifled, Bertuzzi and Fabbri fed Seider, to Raymond it went, and Detroit worked the perimeter.

Seider set up at the point, fed Larkin and Larkin got a great chance that was stopped and rebound sent high by Bertuzzi.

The Wings held possession for a moment, but Seider sent a shot wide and the Yotes cleared the zone.

Seider fumbled his next rush into the Yotes’ zone and Arizona skated deep, Hronek stole the puck and skated out of trouble, but Arizona cleared the zone with ease.

Nedeljkovic gave the puck to Hronek, who pushed the puck deep, Gagner and Leddy fumbled their exchange, and Suter came back with 15 left in the PP.

Hronek was bumped, Leddy found Zadina, and his shot went high, wide and out to center as the PP expired.

With 5:50 left in the period, Detroit chugged up and in, Rasmussen, Namestnikov and Erne battled, cycled, and worked the puck to the line, Namestnikov fed Erne for a wrap-and-shoot shot, and that was stopped by Wedgewood.

With 5:15 remaining in the 2nd/14:45 expired, Lyubushkin got called for slashing after being elbowed in the head by Rasmussen.

Liam O’Brien sat as Lyubushkin went to the room for concussion protocol.

On the power play, Larkin wound up at center, fed Fabbri via Raymond, Bertuzzi fed Seider, to Fabbri it went, Larkin slid a slinky shot in on goal and it was stopped, as was Bertuzzi’s rebound, Fabbri and Bertuzzi cycled, Larkin worked down low to Seider and he looked for an opening.

Raymond slid the puck to Bertuzzi, back to Raymond to Seider it went, his wrister was deflected, Seider and Fabbri exchanged, Wedgewood stopped Seider, Larkin fed Raymond, to Seider it went, to Raymond, he fed Fabbri cross ice, Berutzzi fed Fabbri and his shot was stopped;

And Wedgewood took the rebound of Fabbri’s shot to the neck, stopping play with 33 left in the PP and 3:47 left in the 2nd period.

Detroit was the team to ask for a stoppage in play for Wedgewood’s sake. He stayed in the game.

Detroit lost the next faceoff, lost control of the puck, and had to chase it down ice, where the Coyotes chipped it into the crowd.

Detroit then lost the blueline draw, Arizona sent the puck out of play again, and the 2nd PP unit took a center ice draw that the Wings lost.

Arizona stopped possession at center, Detroit tried to cycle, and Arizona skated into Detroit’s zone, Crouse fired wide, Zadina reversed the puck, Leddy battled as did Hronek, Rasmussen helped, and Hronek chugged up the gut, fed Suter, he wrapped back to Hronek, DeKeyser blasted a hard shot high and wide, Keller took over, and skated into the Wings’ zone.

Zadina took the puck into the Yotes’ zone, fed Lindstrom, and he fired wide.

Rasmussen and Erne cycled, Rasmussen worked the puck deep, jabbed it to the slot and NAMESTNIKOV HIT THE POST.

Detroit regrouped, but so did the Coyotes, chipping and chasing, and Namestnikov played the puck around the back boards, Seider gave it up, and blocked an O’Brien shot.

Dzingel was blocked, Fabbri fed Smith who skated into the Yotes’ zone, Detroit battled the puck deep, worked it to the line and Seider fed Veleno, off his stick it went to Oesterle, Veleno fed a slapper in on Wedgewood, and Arizona skated out 4 on 3, but changed.

Nedeljkovic passed the puck up to Fabbri in the offensive zone, he was stopped, and Arizona iced the puck.

With just over 30 seconds remaining in the period, Arizona chased Hronek back into the Wings’ zone, Raymond and Hronek played the puck deep, Hronek was stopped by Lyubushkin, Bertuzzi and Raymond cycled, Hronek fired a tipped shot into Wedgewood, and that was 2 periods of play.
