Dylan Larkin dangles through the vaccination issue while speaking with The Athletic

This is quite the dangle, per The Athletic’s Ryan S. Clark, Mark Lazerus and Josh Kloke at the NHL Media Tour in Chicago:

Detroit Red Wings captain and center Dylan Larkin said he got “peace of mind” by getting the shot. But he measured his words carefully on the topic, repeatedly saying “it’s your own beliefs” that matters most regarding the vaccine. But after saying “I don’t mean to be disrespectful,” he added, “but you can read into it how I’m saying it.”

“In our league right now, there’s no mandatory rule,” Larkin said. “To me, I’m very sensitive to who I talk to or how you talk to someone about it. It’s your belief. It’s what you want to do. So yeah, there’s conversation (about) it in the locker room. And if there’s someone that strongly believes that they don’t want to get it, in my opinion, that’s their right.”

Continued; for once, I disagree with the captain, but I got the shot early because I have an aunt who is immune-compromised, and I believe we have a duty to protect everyone for whom the shot is unavailable or ineffective.

Red Wings defeat Stars 5-4 at prospect tournament

The Detroit Red Wings’ prospects won a tight a 5-4 decision vs. the Dallas Stars’ prospects at the 2021 prospect tournament. The box score is coming…

Update: It was a wild game as Detroit built a 5-1 lead but was unable to hold on–almost. Detroit was out-shot 35-23 by Dallas and Victor Brattstrom fought through some cramping to backstop the Wings to a solid-enough start, though the Wings were a little loose throughout the game.

Kirill Tyutyayev had 2 goals, Lucas Raymond had 1 and the Wings played quite well early, but Brattstrom bailed them out on numerous occasions.

Monroe: Toledo Walleye re-sign Randy Gazzola

Per the Toledo Blade’s Mark Monroe:

The Toledo Walleye have agreed to terms with defenseman Randy Gazzola for the 2021-22 season.

Gazzola returns after helping the Walleye to its Kelly Cup Final appearance in the 2019 playoff year, when he registered one goal and seven assists over his first 24 games as a pro.

“Randy represents exactly what we look for when we are recruiting,” Walleye coach Dan Watson said. “He is a player who wants to get better, has high expectations and standards of himself, wants to win, but more importantly, he is a true leader and great person. Randy will be counted on to play big minutes, like he did during our Kelly Cup run.”

Following a year overseas, Gazzola suited up with Fort Wayne this past season, posting 33 points on four goals and 29 assists over 49 contests. He then added two goals and five assists in 13 playoff contests, helping the Komets to the Kelly Cup championship.

In the SHL, Simon Edvinsson finished at +1 with 2 shots taken in 18:23 played, Theodor Niederbach finished even in 6:23 played, and Elmer Soderblom finished even with 2 shots in 6:02 played as the Frolunda Indians won 2-0 over Skelleftea AIK;

William Wallinder finished at +2 in only 5:53 played during Rogle BK’s 5-1 win over Leksands;

And in the Finnish Liiga, Albin Grewe finished even in 7:02 played as Ilves won 3-2 over Tappara;

Free Press’s Crawford: 8 Red Wings games to air exclusively on ESPN+/Hulu

This is not great news, per the Free Press’s Kirkland Crawford:

Detroit Red Wings fans may wanna look into a streaming service or two if they’re trying to watch all 82 games this season. 

The NHL’s new national TV partners, ESPN and Turner Sports, released their schedules for the upcoming season. The Wings, once one of the hottest tickets in the game, don’t have the same cache as before — missing the postseason each of the last five years will do that to you. Still, Detroit will get a few looks on the new channels. 

The Wings will have eight games exclusively on ESPN-Plus/Hulu, which are available in the Disney-Plus bundle. Those games: home vs. Florida, 7 p.m. Oct. 29; at Dallas, 8:30 p.m. Nov. 16; vs. Nashville, 7 p.m. Dec. 7; at San Jose, 10:30 p.m. Jan 11; vs. Arizona, 7:30 p.m. March 8; vs. Minnesota, 7 p.m. March 10; at Carolina, 7 p.m. April 14 and at Florida, 7 p.m. April 21. 

As of now, Detroit is not scheduled to have any games on ESPN or ABC. 

TNT, the new home for the Winter Classic, Heritage Classic and Stadium Series, will have two Wings games: vs. Chicago, 7:30 p.m. Jan. 26 and vs. N.Y. Rangers, 7:30 p.m. March 30.

Red Wings 2021 Prospect Tournament, Day 1: Morning skate report

The Detroit Red Wings’ prospects took to the ice at Centre ICE Arena in Traverse City, MI this morning for an hour-long skate ahead of tonight’s game opposite the Dallas Stars.

The game will be broadcast on YouTube starting at 6:40 PM EDT (and the tournament box scores, stats and rosters will be available on Poinstreak.com);

At present, it appears that Wings prospects’ coach (and Grand Rapids Griffins bench boss) Ben Simon will be starting 24-year-old Victor Brattstrom in the net, as Brattstrom received his own net for most of the morning skate, and he was the first goaltender off the ice.

It also appeared that the Red Wings were going to ice a power play unit of Joe Veleno, Chase Pearson and Lucas Raymond up front, and Jonatan Berggren and Jared McIsaac on defense. Expect that quintet to receive a significant amount of ice time with the man advantage, and Veleno, Pearson and Raymond to possibly play together on the first line.
