Updated with Khan at 4:48 PM: Red Wings restricted free agent defenseman Simon Edvinsson showed up for training camp without a contract, and as such, he’s not participating in full-contact scrimmages, but Edvinsson is optimistic about being ready for and under contract during the 2026-2027 regular season.

Edvinsson spoke with the media about his situation on Friday, including the Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan…

“I don’t see the reason for me to sit at home,” Edvinsson said Friday, Sept. 18, after a workout. “We are going into a new season and (it’s important) everyone is linked together. Everybody needs to be on the same page. That’s my reasoning to come over here.”

The fact Edvinsson chose to get to Detroit and participate in training camp spoke volumes to coach Todd McLellan.

“He could be at home, waiting and skating, and he’s going to be well conditioned,” McLellan said. “But he wanted to come over and be with his teammates. He’s involved. He’s not signed right now but it’s not his fault. We haven’t had a lot of ability in the organization to get that stuff done. Give him credit, he’s come over and now it’s time for our organization to work fast with him and fair.”

The Wings named Shawn Horcoff interim GM earlier this week, replacing Steve Yzerman, who was removed from the post in mid-July. Horcoff took over day-to-day operations at that point, but didn’t have the power to negotiate deals.

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings, in conjunction with Detroit SportsNet and Audacy, today announced the Red Wings’ local television, streaming and radio schedules for the 2026-27 preseason. This schedule is subject to change.

Detroit’s preseason road games against the Columbus Blue Jackets (Monday, Sept. 21 at 7:00 p.m.) and Pittsburgh Penguins (Tuesday, Sept. 22 at 7:00 p.m.) will be streamed live on DetroitRedWings.com, free to watch for fans in the Red Wings’ television territory (state of Michigan + Lucas County, OH). Detroit SportsNet begins its production of Red Wings games by airing preseason home contests against the Buffalo Sabres (Thursday, Sept. 24 at 7:00 p.m.) and Blue Jackets (Saturday, Sept. 26 at 7:00 p.m.).

MLive’s Ansar Khan, the Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan and The Athletic’s Max Bultman also pose questions to Edvinsson about his contract and the fact that he’s “never been through this kind of summer before.”

He also admits that he has seen the groundbreaking high-cap deals and thought about them, but his agent is the one who’s negotiating with the Red Wings right now, and Edvinsson says that he’d feel much more nervous if he was back in Sweden right now.

He says he’s on a pro try-out (PTO) jokingly, and states that he’s in the best shape of his life right now.

EliteProspects posted an excellent story in which Sean Shapiro, Helena Hsieh and Jacob Titus attended 3 big prospect tournaments, discussing the standout players from each tournament. Shapiro liked what he saw from Carter Bear and Theo Rochette:

Carter Bear, LW, Detroit Red Wings

Carter Bear is one of the quietest hockey players around. In fact, off the ice, former teammate Landon DuPont has jokingly said that he’s had to make sure Bear was awake before the game started. But when he’s not hibernating away from the rink, Bear is a menace on it, and he turned into a one-man play-driving force through the neutral zone and attacking down the wing, constantly pushing back defenders and then changing the pace for either shot or passing opportunities. He deserves a shot at playing NHL games this season; it might be a bit rushed, but he’s the type of player Detroit needs in this awkward time period.

Théo Rochette, C, Detroit Red Wings 

Théo Rochette should have been a dominant force at this tournament as a 24-year-old with three years of NL experience, and he was. When Detroit sat Nate Danielson in the second game, Rochette seized the opportunity as the Red Wings’ No. 1 centre. He’s coming off a pretty strong pro season in Switzerland, and in an otherwise underwhelming offseason for the Red Wings, his signing and potential could be one of the underrated bright spots. He will likely spend most of the season in the AHL, but if or when Detroit has to shuffle its centre depth, maybe related to a certain captain trade, Rochette could be ready for an NHL job.

Continued (unlocked), with honorable mentions for Trey Augustine, Noah Dower-Nilsson and Grand Rapids Griffins-contracted Kienan Draper earning “honorable mentions.”

This afternoon, TSN’s Cameron Gaunce, a former NHL’er, argues that Red Wings forward Dylan Larkin having shown up to training camp is a bigger distraction than Connor Hellebuyck not showing up to the Winnipeg Jets’ training camp:

Over the course of a 3:35 clip, Gaunce suggests that leadership discussions will be awkward for their defrocked captain, that Simon Edvinsson’s status as not re-signed as of yet makes the situation worse, and Gaunce compares and contrasts the awkwardness of Larkin coming through the door with Connor Hellebuyck not being present at all.
