Red Wings sign Pius Suter

The Red Wings snagged the one unrestricted free agent I’d hoped they’d target, 25-year-old sniper Pius Suter:

28-year-old right-shooting defenseman who spent last year with the Henderson Silver Knights. The 5’11,” 187-pound native of Markham, Ontario posted 27 points in 37 AHL games last year, after starting the year with Dynamo Minsk.

Craig Morgan: Red Wings ‘close’ to signing Jordan Oesterle to 2-year deal

Oesterle is 29, and is a native of Deaborn Heights, Michigan. A Western Michigan University alumnus, he’d basically replace Alex Biega as the Wings’ #6/7 guy. The 6’2,” 180-lb defenseman had 20 points in 71 games in 2018-19, but he’s posted a total of 65 points over the course of 252 NHL games.

The Detroit Red Wings have rounded out their defense by signing Jordan Oesterle to a two-year contract.

Oesterle, 29, is a 6-foot, 182-pound left-shooting defenseman. He appeared in 43 games for the Arizona Coyotes last season, picking up a goal and 10 assists and posting a minus-10 rating.

A Dearborn Heights native, Oesterle played for three seasons at Western Michigan, where he was a teammate of Detroit defenseman Danny DeKeyser for two years.

The undrafted Oesterle played three seasons with Edmonton, one with Chicago and the past three years with the Coyotes. He has appeared in 252 NHL games over seven seasons, tallying 15 goals and 65 points.

The Red Wings now have eight defensemen projected to be on their 2021-22 season-opening roster – left-shooters Nick Leddy, Marc Staal, DeKeyser and Oesterle and right-shooters Filip Hronek, Troy Stecher, Gustav Lindstrom and Moritz Seider.

The Athletic’s Mendes weighs in on Bobby Ryan’s future

Here’s an interesting take from The Athletic’s Ian Mendes, who covered Bobby Ryan in Ottawa:

I think Sam Gagner re-signing in Detroit probably closes the door on Bobby Ryan returning to the Red Wings.

Duff wonders if the Wings will ‘Chase’ Glendening

This is an intriguing suggestion from Detroit Hockey Now’s Bob Duff, who weighs in on the Wings’ loss of faceoff specialist Luke Glendening to Dallas:

In fact, the Wings believe they have someone capable of filling Glendening’s skates already in their farm system. Center Chase Pearson has spent the past two seasons working as a checking center with Detroit’s AHL farm club in Grand Rapids and they believe he has the tool kit to be an effective fourth-line center at the NHL level.

Always a responsible two-way center, in his last NCAA season at Maine, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Pearson was presented the Frank Jones Award as the best defensive forward by the New England Hockey Writers Association.

Selected 140th overall by Detroit in the 2015 NHL entry draft, Pearson played all four years at Maine. He’s posted successive 8-14-22 seasons with Grand Rapids. Interestingly, the first year, he did it in 59 games. Last season, it took him just 28 games to put up the same numbers. Pearson also improved from minus-3 to plus-9.
