The Detroit #RedWings today assigned Riley Barber, Taro Hirose and Joe Veleno to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins. Additionally, Detroit designated Kyle Criscuolo and Seth Barton as injured non-roster and placed Jakub Vrana on IR.

With an hour and 40 minutes to go before the Red Wings must submit their opening night roster to the NHL, Detroit Hockey Now’s Bob Duff penned a subscriber-only article discussing the shape of the Wings’ roster as he sees it shaping up to become, with four question marks–Lucas Raymond, Joe Veleno, Carter Rowney and Givani Smith’s respective statuses:

Lucas Raymond

Pros: Arriving with plenty of hype, Lucas Raymond has been delivering the goods. He ended up finishing the preseason as the Red Wings’ top scorer with six points. He’s made an impact, made the team better, which was what coach Jeff Blashill was demanding of Raymond when training camp opened.

Cons: There just don’t seem to be any that suggest sending Raymond down at this moment is the best option. At Monday’s practice, he was skating with Larkin and Tyler Bertuzzi on the top line. “Right away I knew he was a special player,” Larkin said of Raymond. “He thinks the game, has great hands and can skate. He always looked like a good player. Then I saw him on the ice in training camp and he’s a smart player. I think he thinks at a different level.”

Joe Veleno

Pros: Veleno has significantly upped his strength level. Weighing in at 206 pounds, he’s certainly ready to compete physically at the NHL level. Veleno is also displaying a level of defensive responsibility that will make him a useful NHLer.

Cons: The same questions being asked today about Veleno, hockey people were asking about him three years ago when he was selected by Detroit in the NHL entry draft. Can he produce enough offense to be a top-six or top-nine NHL forward? The team needs to find this out. “That’s a huge part of the decision, even beyond my call,” Blashill admitted.

The Free Press’s Helene St. James posted an article discussing Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill’s explanation as to why the Wings chose to release Bobby Ryan from his pro try-out:

“We just made that decision that that is the best thing for us,” coach Jeff Blashill said after Monday’s practice at Little Caesars Arena. “I wish Bobby a ton of luck going forward. I think he’s a great, great person, a real good player, but that’s (the decision) we made.”

Ryan had two goals and two assists in six games. The decision reflects how well rookie Lucas Raymond has played. The 2020 first-round pick came to camp and impressed with how he fit into the NHL lineup, earning a spot next to Dylan Larkin.

“It at times was portrayed as two guys fighting for one job,” Blashill said. “That was not necessarily the case. But Lucas’ game, and other guys how they played, factored into it for sure. Lucas had a real good first part of camp.”

DetroitRedWings.com’s Ethan Sears kicks off the 25th anniversary of the “Hockeytown” moniker with a list of 25 great moments from the “Hockeytown Era”:

1. Oct. 27, 1995: Russian Five line debuts against Calgary

Prior to the 1995-96 season, the Red Wings completed the Russian Five unit by trading for Igor Larionov. And early in the year, head coach Scotty Bowman decided that the five Russians – Larionov, Sergei Fedorov, Slava Kozlov, Vladimir Konstantinov and Slava Fetisov – would function best as one unit.

It took all of two shifts for them to score, with Kozlov doing the honors and Fedorov and Konstantinov assisting against the Calgary Flames. The Russian Five were involved in another goal that game, which the Red Wings won, 3-0, on their way to a 62-13-7 record.

2. Dec. 2, 1995: Red Wings beat Montreal, 11-1, at the Forum, Patrick Roy demands a trade

Though the Colorado Avalanche weren’t involved in this game, it functions as a prelude to the rivalry. Playing at the famed Montreal Forum, the Red Wings put forth one of the most incredible scoring efforts in history, scoring 11 goals, nine of them on Patrick Roy. It was the worst defeat in franchise history for the Canadiens.

As legend goes, Roy demanded to be traded from the Canadiens mid-game, leading him to be dealt to the Avalanche. From there, the rest is history.
