The Detroit Red Wings will face the Vancouver Canucks this evening (7 PM EDT start on BSD/Sportsnet West/97.1 FM) without Dylan Larkin in the lineup, and Thomas Greiss will start in goal for Detroit. After coach Blashill spoke with the media today, the Wings’ press corps filed articles regarding his remarks:

1. MLive’s Ansar Khan posted an article in which coach Blashill discusses Dylan Larkin’s suspension:

Joseph was not penalized for the check or disciplined by the NHL for an act Blashill believes is more dangerous than the one that got Larkin suspended.

“Philosophically, I think the most dangerous plays in that game by far are the high hits from behind, any kind of push or cross-check high in the numbers where the player goes head-first into the boards,” Blashill said. “If I was a player, those are the plays I’d want to be protected from the most. When I talked to my son last night, when he was asking me questions like why is the punch with a glove on more dangerous than the other one, I had to explain to him that it’s not for me personally.

“Ultimately, Dylan will serve his suspension, we’ll take our medicine and move forward. I think Dylan knows you want to keep your emotions in control at that point, but as I watched it yesterday, I totally understand why he didn’t. None of us are perfect. I totally get it, given what he’s been through and the instances that have arisen over the course of the last 8-10 months.”

Coach Blashill also addressed Larkin’s replacement, one Robby Fabbri, and Blashill spoke about Carter Rowney’s debut as well:

The Red Wings’ morning skate ahead of tonight’s game vs. Vancouver (7 PM on BSD/Sportsnet West/97.1 FM) was briefly-covered by the media, as were coach Jeff Blashill’s post-skate remarks.

We know that the Red Wings will start Thomas Greiss opposite Jaroslav Halak (most likely), we know that Robby Fabbri and Carter Rowney will earn promotions, and we know that the Canucks won’t hold a morning skate after last night’s 5-4 shootout win over Philadelphia as Vancouver’s playing a back-to-back this evening, and is playing their 3rd game in 4 nights tonight.

Via the Detroit News’s Gregg Krupa on Twitter, The Athletic’s Joe Smith reports the following regarding the health of one Mathieu Joseph, whose face got punched by Dylan Larkin after Joseph checked Larkin into the boards head-first:

We hope he’s okay, too, but we don’t know yet as Larkin is “under evaluation.”

The Detroit Red Wings held a brief morning skate ahead of tonight’s game against the Vancouver Canucks (7 PM EDT start on BSD/Sportsnet West/97.1 FM); Vancouver skipped their morning skate for a media availability instead as they’re coming off a 5-4 shootout win over Philadelphia last night (and are playing their 3rd game in 4 nights).

Vancouver is coming off a 5-4 shootout win last night in Philadelphia; the Red Wings were going to be without Dylan Larkin’s services, suspension or no suspension, and they hit the ice at LCA just after 10:30 for their morning skate:

Detroit is hoping to earn its first win against a Canucks team coming into town the beneficiaries of a 5-4 shootout victory over the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday night.

For the Red Wings, Friday was almost as busy as Thursday’s 7-6 OT loss to Tampa Bay:

Almost everything went well for the Grand Rapids Griffins in their home opener. The Griffins defeated the Rockford IceHogs 6-1, on the strength of 6 goals scored by 6 different players; Joe Veleno and Chase Pearson (1G and 1A) were among the scorers; Kirill Tyutyayev had 2 assists in his AHL debut; Jonatan Berggren registered a beautiful assist; and Calvin Pickard stopped 23 of 24 shots for Grand Rapids.

All of the Griffins performed in front of a sellout crowd, as well as Steve Yzerman and Dan Cleary, who made the drive from Detroit to take in Friday night’s game.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Six different Grand Rapids Griffins lit the lamp and five enjoyed two-point nights on Friday as the home team roared to its largest-ever victory in a Van Andel Arena opener, defeating the Rockford IceHogs 6-1 before a capacity crowd of 10,834.

Chase Pearson, Tyler Spezia and Dennis Yan each tallied a goal and an assist while both reigning AHL Defenseman of the Year Ryan Murphy and rookie Kirill Tyutyayev chipped in a pair of helpers, leading Grand Rapids to a win for the fifth time in its last six home debuts.

The Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan found out today that the Red Wings’ coaching staff grades its players on each and every game performance, and it’s hard to earn a perfect grade. Less-than-surprisingly, Tyler Bertuzzi’s 4-goal game yesterday merited a “5 out of 5”:

The Wings’ coaching staff rates every player on a 1-to-5 scale for every game. Coach Jeff Blashill said Friday rarely has a player received a five rating. Bertuzzi achieved that mark.

“He got fives across the board from the coaching staff,” Blashill said. “He was great in all areas of the ice. Obviously offensively, but defensively he tilted the ice a little bit, and he was good on the power play. He had an outstanding game and there certainly was a good vibe in the room.”

Bertuzzi is one of the most popular players in the locker room.

“As I told you guys when the news came out Bert wasn’t going to be vaccinated, our guys love Bert, he’s a guy you want to be around,” Blashill said. “He’s a winner, a great competitor. Everyone knows he had to ground through most of last year rehabbing into the summer, and he had a late start to the exhibition season. For a start like that, it’s awesome. He played excellent.”
