Simon Edvinsson trains with Frölunda – agent’s response

Simon Edvinsson’s contract negotiations with Detroit have been stalled.

Now the 23-year-old has turned home to Gothenburg – to train with Frölunda.

“It takes as long as it needs to take,” said Peter Werner.

Simon Edvinsson, who finished his third NHL season and thusly his first contract this past spring, is back home in Sweden. On Wednesday morning, Sportbladet reported that he had started training with his former team, Frölunda, again.

Details confirmed by Edvinsson’s agent Peter Werner.

“Since the season has started, he can’t train in Detroit now, and the best place to be best prepared when it kicks off for Simon with games again is to be home in Gothenburg.

Has Edvinsson contacted Frölunda and Fredrik Sjöström himself?

“We are the ones who have contacted Frölunda.

“Simon needs somewhere to prepare for the season, and Frölunda has been helpful and friendly to let him for be involved for the moment and train.”

Did you consider him staying in Detroit training on his own?

“We have considered several things and concluded that going to Gothenburg would be the best for Simon.

How long Edvinsson will remain in Gothenburg is impossible to answer, according to Werner. His representatives are prepared to wait out the situation.

“It takes as long as it needs to take. It is an ongoing negotiation that is proceeding.”

There is no possibility that he will play games with Frölunda’s SHL team?

“No.”

Through Frölunda’s press officer, Peter Petersson Kymmer, Edvinsson says he will not do any media interviews.

Frölunda’s sporting director Fredrik Sjöström says that the initiative to train with the team came from Edvinsson himself.

“He has simply asked if he can train with us. We’ve said he gets it to the extent that it works for us. Now Folin is injured, and there is room for training. Then we feel it’s OK,” he said.

There is no timetable for how long the NHL defenseman will train with Frölunda.

“I don’t know how long he is in Sweden, so we’ll have to take it day by day a little. The only thing we’ve offered is that he can train with us.”

But that he would play here all season is pretty out of the question, huh?

“It’s not about him training with us.”

Sjöström says it’s about helping a player with the roots of the team while the negotiations are underway.

“We like Simon. He’s a gun guy. Now he’s got into this situation. If we can set up a little bit for him, and help a guy of our own in his situation, of course we want to do it. It’s no more than that,” he said.

Nylander waited

The last time a major Swedish player got into a protracted contract dispute with his NHL club was William Nylander in 2018. Then the negotiations dragged on properly, which meant that Nylander did not have a contract in place before the month of December.

If Edvinsson is ready to go the same way that Nylander, Peter Werner does not want to answer.

“We are not speculating about ongoing negotiations.”

Have negotiations taken a different direction since Shawn Horcoff was appointed Detroit’s temporary general manager?

“Just as I said, ‘We’re not commenting on ongoing negotiations.’

How does Edvinsson tackle this in his relatively young hockey career?

“He’s doing everything to prepare to be the best hockey player once he’s going to start playing games again. Simon focuses on becoming the best hockey player he can be.”
