Red Wings-Blackhawks preseason game #1 Tweetcap: Detroit wins 3-2 over Chicago thanks to strong performances by its youth (Finnie and MBN in particular)

The Detroit Red Wings’ “B Team” battled Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night at Little Caesars Arena, and while it took the Wings 43 shots on the valiant Arvid Soderblom, the Red Wings would prevail by a 3-2 tally.

Carter Mazur (from Emmitt Finnie and John Leonard) gave the Wings a 1-0 lead on the PP at 14:26 of the 1st; Bedard would score to tie the game early in the 2nd on the PP; Nate Danielson would respond (from Wallinder and Brandsegg-Nygard) 4:21 into the 2nd, and when Wyatt Kaiser scored at 6:26 of the 3rd to tie the game, Detroit put their collective foot on the gas, and Emmitt Finnie would score on a gorgeous rebound of a shot from Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, off a keep-in from Ian Mitchell, to make it 3-2 Detroit…

And while he stopped 15 of 17 shots, Sebastian Cossa was strong early, strong late, and the goals he gave up were anything but soft.

Here’s the “Tweetcap”:

1st period:

GOAL: Mazur from Finnie and Leonard at 14:26 1st, 1-0 Detroit.

2nd period:

On a Chicago power play (lame “trip” against Brandsegg-Nygard at 2:28 2nd), Connor Bedard scores from Sam Rinzel and Frank Nazar at 2:41 to tie the game 1-1. PPG.

However, at 4:21 of the 2nd period, Danielson would win a faceoff to Brandsegg-Nygard, he’d slide the puck back to William Wallinder at the point, and the puck would bounce off Nate Danielson to afford Detroit a 2-1 lead at 4:21 of the 2nd.

3rd period: Detroit took a too-many men penalty at 1:41 of the 3rd and Chicago got the opportunity to tie the game on the power play…

But Cossa held the fort, Finnie and Brandsegg-Nygard were good in front of #33, and Detroit killed the penalty.

Sadly, Artem Levshunov would charge up the wing, he lateral passed once, and Austin Thompson would send it to Wyatt Kaiser, who roofed the puck over a partially-screened Cossa at 6:26 of the 3rd.

2-2 tie.

Ryan Greene would take a hooking minor at 7:57 of the 3rd, affording Detroit a power play…But the Red Wings could not convert.

Later, at 12:38, Ian Mitchell would stop a Hawks clearing attempt at the half boards, he’d center it to Michael Brandsegg-Nygard, he’d blast a shot on Arvid Soderblom and the rebound went to Emmitt Finnie, who ripped the rebound home.

Detroit reclaimed the lead and led 3-2 on shot 40 on Arvid Soderblom.

Emmitt Finnie made a TREMENDOUS diving play on Connor Bedard late in the 3rd period as the Hawks pressed, and Arvid Soderblom was pulled for an extra attacker with 1:02 left in the 3rd, but Detroit stood tall, as did Sebastian Cossa, as the Wings took home the victory.
