A short health update

Among the many supportive comments I’ve received during my hiatus due to anxiety attacks and depression, it was suggested that I keep my updates to a minimum until I returned. So I went quiet for a couple of weeks.

Regrettably, my recovery has taken longer than expected due to persistent symptoms of anxiety compounded by depression. I haven’t quit and I haven’t given up on getting better–I’m just trying to get back to enough of a semblance of health that allows me to work.

For me, dealing with anxiety and depression are daily battles, even when I’m at my best. I still have to fight through symptoms of both illnesses to get out of bed and function every day.

I’m not at the point where I can fight through my illnesses to the point that I can work, not yet, anyway. While I’ve spent the last three weeks going to bed hoping that I will feel OK enough to grind out a day’s work, I’ve spent the last three weeks in significant pain, and the pain hasn’t let up.

As soon as I can fight through it, I will get back to work, and I will work very hard to return to providing a one-stop shop for Wings news. In the interim, however, I am doing my damnedest to recover and heal. I am sorry for the interruption in service, but I’ve been a bit of a mess lately, and I’m trying to sort it out.

Thank you for your support and readership. I’m hoping that things will get back to more regularly abnormal ASAP.

  1. Take care of yourself George.
Wings have shown signs of life and hopefully this will continue during your down time.
    Best wishes!

  2. I will add you to my list of people that I pray for on a daily basis. Keep doing your best to fight through this. You’ve got a lot of people pulling for you.

  3. Best of Luck George, I know it seems the cliche thing to say but keep plugging away and look after yourself. Whilst we miss you. It’s more important that you need to come first. Let us know if there is a way to support you further. All the Best

  4. Good to hear from you George. I was getting worried and actually ask Paul to contact you.

Please don’t apologize. This is something not worthy of one. Health first: mind, body and spirit.

BTW this is all of us “back to more regularly abnormal”
Miss you and sending you some positive energy.

  5. George, we were worried about you. Thanks for the update on you. We will be here when you return. Peace to you.

    1. Yes, George, we most definitely will be here!
      Your health is #1. 🙂
      Many prayers & best wishes,
      John D.

  6. Get better George. We’re all pulling for you, and we’ll be ready to engage when you’re back.

  7. We’re with you, man.

    Health first.

Your blog is sui generis in the sports world – that I know of anyway.

Looking forward to it whenever you’re ready. That would be true if it was one week, a month, or a year or more.

  8. Hey George,

I hope things are improving for you, but if they aren’t please know that we support you taking as much time as necessary. I feel for you going through a prolonged rough patch and with your website independence you have to be adding to your own pressure to come back. Please don’t pressure yourself! We do miss what you do, but we’re going to need you around extra long this season with the Wings unexpected lengthy playoff run this spring! 🙂

Best of luck to you and your family. With the nearness of the holidays there’s extra pressure coming for many of us in the weeks ahead. Be like George and take care of yourself and your mental health first before trying to take on the externals. Folks understand.

Cheers, buddy. We’ll be here when you are.

  9. Nice to hear from you again, George, & best of luck each day going forward.

I’ll keep you in my thoughts.

  10. Update on Veleno: 17 GP, 11 G, 12 A, pts 23, PM 9 (1 major), + 15. Outstanding +/-. Waiting to see if Flip Larsson plays vs tonight vs. St. Cloud St. He has not played to date. He is not starting tonight. They said that Cooley is playing for Denver due to injuries. Larsson likely still on the shelf.

  11. Update: Larson–no games played, Berggren 16GP, 3A, 3pts, Veleno 19GP, 11G, 12 A, 23 pts, +11

  12. Veleno: 22 GP, 16 g, 19 a, 35 pts, + 21. Berggren: 16 GP 3A ( hasn’t played in 2 weeks), Flip Larson 1 GP, 0-0-1, .913 SP. Larson plays 1st game this weekend.

  13. Mr. Veleno appears to be a man among boys… good for him.

I have never been a fan of protectionist rules that may be good for commerce . They usually appear unfair to the most talented people. Would he be killing it in Grand Rapids? I think so. Would that help Mr. Veleno ? Yes! But… good people must be kept where their age determines their place.

NHL is now a young game. Holding on to them until their over-ripe is now extinct. Right Mr. Holland?! Mr. Bettman?
