HSJ: Wings won’t sign Jordan Sambrook

Per the Free Press’s Helene St. James:

Sambrook will re-enter the draft, and there’s probably a team that will take a chance on him.

  1. Good news. We have to start addressing this log jam of guys with no NHL future. The 50-cap limit on contracts is also a consideration, with 11 picks last year and 11 more this year. We need to assess guys quicker and move on. Hope to hear that we’re walking away from UFAs like Lorito, Elson, Street. I’d even cut lose RFAs like Renouf, Puempel, even Nastasiuk appears to be a bust already. Maybe make a minor league trade and get rid of Russo or McIlrath.

I also highly doubt anyone re-drafts Sambrook. Someone can just invite him on a pro try-out next fall. Why waste a pick on him?

Not the most recent article, but gives some idea of some of the players at issue from a GR perspective.

It sounds like both Street and Tangradi are likely to move on.
Maybe Lorito, too, though I don’t believe he’s an RFA as this article indicates. Elson….Elkins…I’m not sure why the Griffins needed quite so many veterans last season. If you want a veteran scorer and distributor, keep Lorito, if any.

Puempel, you might as well keep around as a young sniper and scorer, if a one-dimensional one.

If Ford is Nelson’s guy and Nelson comes back, great, re-sign Ford to another AHL contract.

Both Nastasiuk and Sadowy already seem like busts. But maybe that’s how you fill out the bottom of the roster for the next season or so.

On defense, something has to give. It would seem like the organization would have to choose between moving Russo or not qualifying Renouf. It’s just not necessary to have four veterans on D.
